General Description

History

Divinity is a subject that explores religion in general and Islam in particular. The content of the divinity discipline covers wide variety of issues both historically and contemporarily related to Islam such as its belief system, practices, ethical codes and their application to daily-basis lives of Muslims. Furthermore, it also informs on the emergence of Holy Books throughout history, particularly the Holy Quran, which is the Holy Book of Muslims, and the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, which is the second major source of Islamic Sciences after the Quran. It has wide variety of study areas mainly divided into two categories: Islamic sciences such as tafseer, hadith, Islamic law, Sufism and the social sciences such as sociology of religion, psychology of religion, philosophy of religion and so on.
The divinity school has two major departments: Divinity and The Teacher Education Program in Religious Culture and Ethics. The former was established in 1980 and the latter in 1996. Both departments mission is to offer a high quality education to undergraduate and graduate students as well as to conduct world-class research in divinity and religious education. The departments therefore have three interrelated objectives:
The first objective is to provide well-equipped theoretical base on definitions, explanations and understandings of various fields in religious literature.
The second objective is to provide the process of the creation and development of literature pertaining to religious sciences; to determine the reflections of the literature on daily life and to provide knowledge and skills to put the reflections into practice in daily life.
The third objective is to provide a comprehensive insight on daily life by comprehending the religious sciences and literature.
In order to fulfill its objectives, the department is committed to carrying teaching and research by combining daily life and traditional religious knowledge. The structure of the course programme is designed to provide a broad based training in theory and practice. In addition, the academic staff and students have growing commitments for carrying out international collaboration with other universities in order to raise their international profile. In the context of elective courses, the small number of students allow for strong and frequent interaction between faculty and students. The academic staff is committed to both teaching and making contributions to the sciences of theology by theoretical and empirical research. The structure of the department covers three areas:
Major Islamic Sciences
Philosophy and Religious Sciences
Islamic History and Arts
The Department of Divinity defines its mission as to offer a highly innovative reseach-oriented academic education on universal standards. To this purpose, the Department gives full support to national and international research activities of its staff, and encourages the creation of a professional and competitive academic miliue. The Department of Divinity adopts the principles of tolerance, scientific work, self-reliance, rationality, scientific ethics and academic freedom. With its young and distinguished staff, the Department aims to acquaint its students with recent methods, approaches and theories in religion, and to train them as the future practitioners of the discipline.
