Course Objective

To make analysis and results concerning the problems of modern Islamic society by comprehending and interpreting the development and classical process of Islamic History on the basis of facts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understand the development progress which was experienced by Islamic society during the time period of the first four Caliphs.
2   Have knowledge about the conquests and governance.
3   Analyze the socio-political and economic causes and results of domestic disorders and provocative attempts.
4   Trace the transition from caliphate to sultanate in Umayyad period.
5   Gain understanding and interpreting the construction of a global Muslim society by means of conquests in the framework of events and facts.

Assessment Criteria

After Prophet Muhammad; political, social, military and administrative developments which were experienced in the time period of the first four Caliphs: The Caliphate of Abu Bakr, Riddah movements and the beginning of conquests. Appointment of Omar as a caliph, conquests and institutionalization. The conquests during the era of Uthman and caliphate crisis, Caliph Ali s era and solution seeking for the caliphate.
The foundation of Umayyads and its structure, conquests in the era, the formation of Islamic territory, political-religious conflict and the birth of Islamic sects.
The political events in foundation and growth periods of Abbasids, the formation of Islamic Science and culture by means of civilization vision , the religious, ethnic and cultural pluralistic structure of the society and the improvement of institutionalization in government, the transition of Islamic territory to multi-centric structure as a result of the weakening of the caliphate.
