General Description

History

The inception of the Faculty of Architecture was based on Ege Özel Mimarlık Mühendislik High School, which was established in Buca in 1963 and was the first school in İzmir where architectural education was given. Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Architecture was established in 1992. The institution started its undergraduate education in architecture with 12 students under the name of "Ege University, Faculty of Engineering, Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Architecture" in 1971. Since then, the institution has experienced new structuring within the framework of various institutional and legal formations. In 1975, it continued undergraduate education in Architecture, under the new name of the Faculty of Fine Arts; it joined the organization of the "Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture" in 1982; in 1992, it took its present name of "DEU Faculty of Architecture". The education, which started in the faculty building in Alsancak, moved to the Tınaztepe Campus in 2004 and it continues to provide education until today.
DEU Department of Architecture is the first Architecture Department of Izmir, providing education since 1971. It is in a leading position among the institutions that provide architectural education throughout the country. The department is included in the first 5 departments among the architecture departments providing Turkish education (excluding scholarship and discounted ones) and is included in the first 10 departments among the architecture departments providing Turkish and English education according to the ranking of university preference points.
DEU Department of Architecture has received "6-Year Full Accreditation" by the Architectural Education Accreditation Association (MIAK) with the decision of the Board of Directors no. 4 taken at the 9th Term 11th Meeting dated September 7, 2023. More information

2   The holder can develop original spatial and formal design proposals where the discourse-theory-practice relationship is established by considering all inputs related to architectural design as a whole.
3   The holder collects information related to design by using research methods and techniques, evaluates it comparatively, has the ability to transform the information acquired into a design idea by questioning and interpreting it with a multi-dimensional perspective and a critical approach.
4   The holder can use different representation environments and current technologies in a way that can effectively convey ideas and solution proposals related to design in written, verbal and visual formats.
5   The holder understands and evaluates universal and local architecture, art approaches, in the context of historical and cultural diversity relations.
6   The holder has command of current developments (architectural design, theory, material, construction system, technology), has a lifelong research and learning approach.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Relative Grading System is applied in all courses and the course passing grade is DD (conditional passing). Regarding exams and course grades, relevant articles of the DEU Associate and Undergraduate Education and Exam Regulations (Official Gazette dated 12 August 2011 and numbered 28023) and Faculty of Architecture Teaching and Examination Principles are applied.
The type of in-term and end-of-term evaluations (exam, homework, project, application, etc.) and their weights, applied assessment and evaluation methods are described in detail by the lecturer of the course in the Course Description Form included in the information package, in accordance with the credit system. In addition, lecturers prepare detailed course leaflets on how to conduct the courses at the beginning of the term and provide them to the students. These leaflets contain the process management and evaluation along with the data pertaining to the relevant project at that semester such as site, program, etc.
