Course Objective

The objective of this course is to establish the simple spatial relationships that base on the organization of semi-open and open spaces and the duality of private and public spaces through a low-rise single building together with its environmental design. It is
aimed both to examine the basic concepts related to design subject and location, and to design different spatial organizations for allowing novel experiences together with the landscape.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To analyze the natural/built environment and interpret the conceptual understanding of the place, to express these analysis and interpretations.
2   To evaluate the relationships between the natural/built environment and the human being within the specific conditions of the given design problem.
3   To establish simple spatial relationships based on the organization of public-private spaces and closed-semi open-open spaces through a low-rise building together environmental design.
4   To produce an original architectural design project at the end of creative analysis, research, and synthesis through a specific architectural concept.
5   To express the architectural design project and original design ideas using different media and techniques (visually, orally, and written).

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

All learning process develops through Project / Problem Based Learning method. Students will generate ideas on the architectural design problem given; develop their ideas and productions throughout critics. Courses will be in the form of classworks and critics. Student works will be criticized by the instructors.

Assessment Criteria

There will be a project (100%) with preliminary work and intermediate submissions throughout the semester. In-class work (assignments, workshops, workshops, quizzes, etc.), intermediate submissions (assignment submission, jury submission, pre-jury submission, etc.), class participation (design journal, etc.), final project and jury will be graded.

Studio activities (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5)
Assignments (LO1, LO2, LO3)
Preliminary jury / submissions (LO1, LO2, LO4, LO5)
Final jury (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5)
Active participation (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5)
Design logbook (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5)

1. Studio activities: It can be requested by the instructor in the form of individual or group work. Therefore, 'active participation in the class' is important, which depends on the quality of the time and effort the student spends in the studio. These works are evaluated through Learning Outcomes (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5) depending on the ability to produce architectural answers with a certain consistency within the framework of the given critiques and the contribution to the creation of a positive learning environment in the studio.
2. Assignments: It may be requested by the instructor as individual or group work. It is the group's responsibility to ensure that each group member contributes approximately equally to the group work. Group and individual submissions are evaluated based on the Learning Outcomes (LO1, LO2, LO3).
3. Preliminary jury / submissions: It is one of the important stages of the design process. Submissions are evaluated on the basis of Learning Outcomes (LO1, LO2, LO4, LO5) depending on the competencies of understanding the given subject, analyzing and interpreting the architectural problem, and expressing the main idea of the architectural design problem with different representation media and techniques.
4. Final Jury: Depending on the competencies of understanding, analyzing and interpreting the architectural problem, producing architectural solutions with a certain consistency, expressing architectural design with different representation media and techniques, it is evaluated through Learning Outcomes (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5).
5. Active participation: The design process is an important part of the evaluations. The student's participation in the course will depend on (i) active participation in the lectures rather than attendance, (ii) the quality of the effort and time spent by the student in the studio, (iii) the ability to produce architectural solutions with a certain consistency within the framework of the criticism given to the ideas he/she has created, and (iv) his/her contribution to the creation of a positive learning environment in the studio. Learning Outcomes (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5) are evaluated based on the learning outcomes.
6. Design logbook: It can be prepared in any format and technique. This diary is expected to contain sketches, research notes, photographs, drawings, etc. that show the studio process of the whole semester; convey the stages of the design process; as well as record the intellectual effort on architecture, design, art, etc. A `design logbook will also be submitted at the end of the semester. It is evaluated on Learning Outcomes (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5).
