Course Objective

Trying to understand physical data presented by architecture not only in the extent of one-dimensional analyses but also on the base of conceptual and contextual relations, verifying this main objective on the base of Modernization concept becoming established in the 20th Century and industrial spaces developing with Modernization.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Describe the methods revealing conceptual/ contextual relations on the base of perceiving architecture, Modernization concept getting strong after industrialization and development process of early industrial spaces, settlements
2   Associate the main approaches of Modernization process with development of early industrial settlements, spaces of different geographies and ideologies
3   Discuss the data obtained in the researches (literature or site studies) realized in the context of selected industrial spaces and in the presentations put forward in different expressions (verbal, written, visual, digital, etc.)
4   Develop the researches and presentations in the light of discussions

1 Meeting, giving general information of the course content
2 Describing different methods which enable to decipher conceptual/contextual relations of architecture in perceiving and interpreting the physical existence of it. Presenting generally the main methods improved by the theoricans having different approaches
3 Discussing the concept of Modernization which became established in 20th Century, in the frame of the main principles and critics
4 Discussing the industrial settlements, spaces which have been improved with the industrialization and Modernization process- European examples
5 Continuation of discussing industrial settlements, spaces- European and American examples
6 Continuation of discussing industrial settlements, spaces- The examples from Soviet Unions
7 Mid-term exam
8 The improvement of the modernization and industrialization in Turkey from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic
9 The improvement of the industrial spaces/settlements of the Republican Period
10 The presentation on the context of Sümerbank settlements in the Republican Period; student presentations on the industrial spaces and discussions
11 Continuation of the student presentations and discussions
12 Continuation of the student presentations and discussions
13 Continuation of the student presentations and discussions

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

In the course, theoretical/visual/digital lectures related with the subjects will be realized accompanied by the student discussions.
The researches prepared by the students in the context of industrial spaces will be presented as the seminars and discussed in different expressions (verbal, written, visual, digital, etc.). Sstudents will be able to realize the researches based on site studies, or literature review.

35% of the grade is mid-term exam (assignment/presentation), 15% is assignment/presentation, 50% is final exam (assignment). The make-up exam (assignment) is 50% of the grade.
