Course Objective

The aim of the course is to give knowledge about solar control and orientation in architecture to decrease energy requirement of the building according to climatic factors and let the students apply what they learn on a project.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Description of natural environment data evaluation methods,
2   Determination of building shape according to climatic data,
3   Determination of building location according to climatic data and and controlling with orientation,
4   Solar controlling and orientating the building to maintain comfort conditions,
5   Sizing and detailing of solar shading devices according to solar radiation.

Course Contents

1 Introduction to the course, solar architecture, solar geometry, regional conditions for buildings
2 Environment, natural and artificial environment, natural environment data and evaluation methods
3 Evaluation of climatic data for architectural use, location and orientation
4 Determination of building shape according to climatic data
5 Heat gain and heat loss for determination of building envelope (skin)
6 Comfort conditions, providing comfort conditions by using solar energyComfort conditions, providing comfort conditions by using solar energy
7 Mid-term Exam
8 Use of Shading Devices Solar control and orientation of a building with the use of the mask and the sun-path-diagrams
9 Application - determination of the orientation of a given building for a given location
10 Application - determination of the orientation of a given building for a given location

14 Submission of the application project

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course will be taught in a lecture, class presentation and application format. First the lectures will be given on the first 8 weeks. Then on the 9th, 10th,11th, 12th and 13th weeks, the orientation of a chosen building for a given location and shading analysis will be applied by the students and they will submit this study on the 14th week.
