Course Objective

This course aims to raise awareness about different theories of contemporary architecture, philosophy and culture that establish a critical and discursive ground for architecture.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Identify basic concepts of architectural theory and criticism.
2   Relate philosophical, economic, social, cultural and historical paradigms to the field of architecture.
3   Explain, with examples, critical approaches to architecture and its supporting disciplines.
4   Evaluate the basic concepts of architectural theory and criticism in the context of architectural practice.
5   Integrate fundamental theories and criticisms of the discipline of architecture in both written and oral form.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The instructor will conduct presentations and create discussion environments to convey theoretical and factual knowledge related to the field and introduce basic concepts. It is important for students to actively participate in in-class discussions. Throughout the term, conceptual/theoretical written (opinion pieces, original ideas, etc.) or visual (diagrams, mapping, etc.) productions related to the discussed topics will be carried out.
