General Description

History

Dokuz Eylül University (DEU), Faculty of Dentistry was officially established in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Turkey dated October 4, 2019 with the decision of the President's Decree No. 1613 dated 03/10/2019.
Dentistry education lasts for 5 years and taught in Turkish. Students receive basic courses, preclinical and clinical training. In the first 3 years, they mainly receive preclinical education, along with vocational courses related to basic medicine, dentistry and elective courses. Dentistry students, who focus on clinical education and patient treatment in the 4th and 5th years, take professional courses, medical sciences courses and elective courses along with clinical education.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Students coming with Internal Transfer:
For students who want to transfer from higher education institutions in Turkey and abroad to Dokuz Eylül University, the Regulation on the Principles of Transfer between Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs in Higher Education Institutions, Double Major, Minor and Inter-Institutional Credit Transfers and the Evaluation Conditions related to horizontal transfers determined by our University Senate are applied.
Internal Transfer Quotas are announced by the Council of Higher Education. The Evaluation is made by the commissions formed in faculties and colleges and announced by the relevant committees.
Students coming with External Transfer:
The provisions of the Regulation on the Continuation of Undergraduate Education of Graduates of Vocational Schools and Open Education Associate Degree Programs are applied in the vertical transfer of graduates from Vocational Schools to undergraduate programs that are the continuation of their fields of study.
The quotas allocated by the university are reported to the OSYM Presidency. These declared quotas and conditions are announced in the External Transfer Guide prepared by OSYM.
Placement procedures are carried out centrally by ÖSYM according to the results of the External Transfer Exam.

According to Dokuz Eylül University Postgraduate Education Regulations, students are not admitted to the programs affiliated to the Institutes with internal transfer. The student's application showing the course contents and the transcript, the recommendation of the advisor, the opinion of the department chair and the institute's administration, based on the petition regarding which of the courses that the student took while enrolled in another university's graduate program and was successful after enrolling in the same graduate program in Dokuz Eylül, about which ones should be counted from the minimum course load, determined by the decision of the board. The courses taken by the students participating in the exchange programs from the host university are considered as elective or compulsory courses.

5 years, 2 semesters in 1 year, 16 weeks per semester, 300 ECTS.

Profile of the Programme

The aim of the Dentistry Program is to be able to meet the health needs of the country related to dentistry; be sensitive to the oral and dental health problems of the individual, family and society, able to produce solutions, comprehend lifelong learning, adopt universal and ethical values, believe in the universality of science and knowledge, respect human rights, acquire skills suitable for information and communication network, think critically and to train dentists who will set an example for the society that has adopted the principle of being scientific.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   To have the basic and clinical dental and medical knowledge, and ability to systematically evaluate patients
2   To have the knowledge of dental materials and medications and apply necessary knowledge, skills and attitude for appropriate patient management.
3   To be able to develop his/herself in reference to the importance of the idea of life-long learning, to follow the up-to-date scientific studies and technological developments and new treatment methods in the field of Dentistry.
4   Apply professional values, ethical and legal principles in dental practice.
5   To be able to obtain dental and medical anamnesis to make a reliable diagnostic and a treatment plan according to the individual needs.
6   To develop skills for the prevention of infection control during clinical practice and laboratory studies.
7   To have the knowledge on practice management, assistant staff training, effective working, prevention methods from occupational diseases, environmental protection and occupational safety and to be able to apply to practice on these issues.
8   To be able to perform preventive dentistry applications at the clinic and also to endorse the national and international dental health program and projects by attending them.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Dentists graduated from the program can work as dentists in the Ministry of Health, in the dentistry units of some public and private institutions, and in their own private practice. By taking the Examination for Specialization in Dentistry (DUS), they can specialize by completing their specialization education in the departments they are entitled to enter in the Faculties of Dentistry and gain the right to pursue an academic career according to their success. At the same time, they can apply for doctoral education and become a doctor dentist in the relevant field.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The measurement and evaluation methods applied for each course are defined in the course introduction forms prepared by the relevant faculty member(s) and included in the Information Package. Regarding the exams and course grades, the relevant articles of Dokuz Eylül University, Associate Undergraduate and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations and Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Dentistry Education and Exam Application Principles are applied.

Graduation Requirements

Dentistry education is 5 years and the language of education is Turkish. Students receive major courses, preclinical and clinical training. In the first 3 years, they receive preclinical education mainly with basic medicine, vocational courses related to dentistry and elective courses. Dentistry students who focus on clinical education and patient treatment in their 4th and 5th years take vocational courses, medical science courses and elective courses along with clinical education.
