Course Objective

Practical applications of diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases, surgical periodontal treatment.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Have knowledge with full competence in educating patients about oral hygiene practices. It conveys necessary information to patients about the etiology of periodontal diseases and encourages patients to take responsibility for their own oral and dental health.
2   Have sufficient knowledge about the diagnosis and treatment of furcation lesions and be competent to evaluate the indications and refer them to specialists when necessary.
3   Defines the general principles of periodontal surgery, anatomical structures to be considered, and determines the need for periodontal surgical procedures.
4   Evaluates the outcomes of periodontal treatment, makes necessary plans for the prevention of periodontal tissues and supportive treatment.
5   Evaluates periodontal treatments together with restorative, endodontic and orthodontic treatment approaches with a multidisciplinary perspective and defines alternative solutions.

Assessment Criteria

1. The student should be able to describe the education of patients about oral hygiene practices, convey necessary information to patients about the etiology of periodontal diseases, and encourage patients to take responsibility for their oral health.
2. The student should be able to describe the diagnosis and treatment of furcation defects and evaluate the indications.
3. The student should be able to define the general principles of periodontal surgery, the anatomical formations that need attention, and identify the need for periodontal surgery procedures.
4. The student should be able to evaluate the results of periodontal treatment, and make necessary plans for the protection of periodontal tissue health and supportive treatment.
5. The student should be able to evaluate periodontal treatments together with restorative, endodontic and orthodontic treatment approaches and define alternative solutions with a multidisciplinary perspective.
