Course Objective

To give information about biopsy indications and techniques, to give information about preprosthetic surgical interventions applied on hard and soft tissue, to teach the formation, findings and treatments of odontogenic infections, to give information about premedication and drugs used in this field, to teach the principles of apical resection, to prevent odontogenic and nonodontogenic cysts, osteomyelitis. To inform dentistry students about the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical and radiographic findings, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment of maxillary sinus diseases and to emphasize the obligation to refer the patient to a specialist physician when necessary.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explains the clinical working principles before the practical applications of the surgery clinic.
2   Defines the approaches related to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases that occur in the mouth, teeth and tooth-like tissues and the jaw and surrounding tissues.
3   Explains the microbiology and spread of odontogenic infections.
4   Classifies the patient in terms of general health status before oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures.
5   Defines the diseases of the mouth, teeth and tooth-like tissues, the jaw and surrounding tissues, the ways in which systemic diseases that may cause these diseases affect the body, and the dysfunctions in the mouth and its surroundings that occur in diseases.
