Course Objective

To teach the anatomy of periodontal tissues consisting of gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone in detail, to explain the etiological factors that play a role in the pathogenesis and progression of periodontal diseases and their treatments.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students distinguish between periodontal health and disease.
2   Defines the of concept of pocket and attachment, which are fundamental in diagnosis, classification, treatment planning and supportive periodontal diseases.
3   Defines local and systemic etiological factors that play a role in the pathogenesis and progression of periodontal diseases.
4   Classifies periodontal diseases and makes a differential definition of clinical conditions as a result of examining the diseases in question.

2 Macroscopic and Microscopic Anatomy of Connective Tissue Pathogenesis and histopathology of periodontal diseases
3 Periodontal ligament; structure and function Acute and chronic inflammation
4 Cementum; structure and function Pathogenic mechanisms in gingivital inflammation
5 Alveolar bone; structure and function Immunological mechanisms in gingival inflammation.
6 Pocket and attachment concept Diagnosis and epidemiology of periodontal diseases
7 Etiology of periodontal diseases; salivary and gingival sulcus fluid Index systems used in periodontology

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The lesson will be presented in class. Lecture notes will be given to students. Students will follow the lesson from their lecture notes and textbooks.

Assessment Criteria

1. The student should be able to distinguish between healthy periodontal tissues and unhealthy periodontal tissues.
2. The student should be able to define the concepts of pocket and attachment, which are fundamental in the diagnosis, classification, treatment planning and patient follow-up of periodontal diseases.
3. The student should be able to identify local and systemic etiological factors that play a role in the emergence and progression of periodontal diseases,
4. The student should be able to classify periodontal diseases, and make a differential definition of clinical conditions as a result of examining the diseases in question.
