General Description

History

The Department of Tourism Management was founded in 1991 within the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and joined Faculty of Business in 1994. The fields in the Department are, Tourism and Hotel Management, Food and Beverage Management. The rapid growth of tourism in recent years has not only made Turkey one of the leading international tourist destinations, but has also placed the sector among the primary economic forces of the country. The aim of the Department is to offer hgh quality education to meet the increasing need of educated and well-trained labor force in tourism equipped with necessary skills and use of foreign languages. The medium of instruction is English.

Specific Admission Requirements

High school diploma, placement through a national-wide Student Selection Examination, DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test (Minimum 65) or TOEFL-IBT (minimum 72) or equivalent.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

General frame for recognition of prior learning is arranged in Dokuz Eylul University Educational and Examinational Regulation of Pre-Graduate and Undergraduate Degree through the articles 11-12-13-14. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The Bachelors Degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and 240 ECTS. Regulations arrange the details of the requirements:

Profile of the Programme

The rapid growth of tourism in recent years has not only made Turkey one of the leading international tourist destinations, but has also placed the sector among the primary economic forces of the country. Such growth has also resulted in an increasing need of educated and well-trained labor force in tourism, who is equipped with professional knowledge, managerial and communication skills and confidence in the use of foreign languages. To help meet this need, the Department offers a curriculum, in which a balance between academic knowledge and practical application is emphasized. The undergraduate program attempts the cover all the aspects of the multi-dimensional tourism sector, including hotel management, restaurant management, food and beverage management, tourism planning, destination marketing and travel agencies and tour operators.
While students are required to complete one internship program in the summer semester of their junior or sophomore years, the Department puts a great emphasis on developing good relations with the sector and invites sector managers to the Career Days organized each year. Students also have the opportunity to select courses from other departments of the Faculty. Furthermore, students have the opportunity of choosing their majors and join International Erasmus Program for one semester with a scholarship. Except core university courses, education language is English in Tourism Management Department. The department also accepts foreign incoming students with bilateral agreements. Besides students, the department also offers national or international opportunities to its instructors.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Acquire fundamental economic concepts; analyze and interpret functioning, structure and dynamics of national and international markets (goods and services, money and labor) and their impacts on society and institutions.
2   Acquire and use basic knowledge in law, life and social sciences required for the profession.
3   Inform stakeholders in the area of tourism management; to be able to transfer ideas and proposals supported by quantitative and qualitative data about the problems verbally and in writing to experts and nonexperts, either in Turkish or in English.
4   Produce professional written and oral reports on business issues suited for an audience using appropriate technology (Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B2).
5   Produce quality professional written and oral documents on a business topic in a second foreign language suited for an audience using the appropriate technology (Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B1)
6   Have working knowledge and skill in using supportive software for business analysis (European Computer Driving License, Advanced Level)
7   Take Initiative and personal responsibility
8   Lead and function in teams in a business environment effectively.
9   Demonstrate an understanding of the codified body of knowledge in business and to be able to manage his/her learning to follow the developments in his/her profession in order to keep abreast with current business practices in their professional careers and for personal development.
10   Identify problems, infer, deduce, interpret, recognize assumptions, and evaluate arguments using appropriate tools, determine tangible and intangible aspects of the situation, report results and translate all pertinent facts, feelings, opinions, beliefs and advice into the best possible decision, implement the decision.
11   Display awareness of the ethical issues and social responsibility in business, to demonstrate commitment to respect for others' persons, opinions and beliefs, both for internal and external stakeholders in business situations and in society at large.
12   Acquire and use basic knowledge in descriptive and inferential statistics required for the profession
13   Demonstrate an understanding of business, its core business functions and to identify and apply appropriate analytical tools to be used in these core business functions.
14   Establish an organization's strategy; determine the best approach for achieving this strategy applying management tools to address areas such as, profitability, efficiency, growth and competitive advantage concerning stakeholders and shareholders
15   Demonstrate an understanding of service sector and tourism industry and to identify and apply appropriate strategic and analytical tools to be used in the core tourism business practices.
16   Have understanding of fundamental characteristics of individual, group and social relationships and tourist behavior which lay the groundwork of tourism sector and understand cultural differences.
17   Have knowledge on possible crises, their precautions and possible results of these crises in tourism industry, and apply them.
18   Have advanced knowledge and skills on at least one tourism subsector, and use them in national and international context.
19   Demonstrate leadership skills to start / run /manage a business.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The graduates of the Department of Tourism Management are in high demand by many hospitality and tourism enterprises. Graduates and current students are highly recruited for internships and permanent positions. The former graduates of the department have already reached different managerial positions in well-known international and national hotel chains, travel agencies, airline companies and other enterprises in tourism industry. Some graduates are invited to courses by instructors to share their real-world experiences with our current students.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In order to meet international standards, four course categories have been defined in the undergraduate program of Tourism Management. Faculty Core Courses (20%): Calculus, Statistics, Fundamentals of Information Technology, Sociology, Social Psychology, Career Planning and Introduction to Law that aim to support core courses of the profession. Integrated Language Skills, Advanced Writing Skills, Communication Skills, and Volunteerism Studies that aim to develop transferable skills. Departmental Core Courses (55%): These are the fundamental courses of the profession. Departmental Electives (18%): Courses aiming to extend education in accordance with the students relevant area of interest. Unrestricted Electives (7%): Courses aiming at providing the students a broad flexibility for individual development and career choices. These courses also seek to enrich the students perspective and intellectual level.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations for examination and grading are arranged in the fourth part of DEU Faculty of Business Educational and Examinational Regulations. (http://isletme.deu.edu.tr/kurumsal/ana-menu-ogrenciler/deu-isletme-fakultesi-sinav-ve-uygulama-esaslari).
The lowest grade to be successful in a credit course is DD. Other grades; Incomplete (I) accorded to students who, although otherwise successful, have failed to complete the required assignments for a course. A student receiving an incomplete grade for any course must make up for the deficiencies within 30 days after submitting the grades to Registrars Office. Otherwise, the grade I automatically becomes FF. Satisfactory (S) accorded to students who are successful in non-credit courses. Unsatisfactory (U) accorded to students who are unsuccessful in non-credit courses. Exempt ( E) is given to students who transfer to the program from another, after the equivanlence of courses they have taken previously is recommended by the dean/director and approved by the faculty board. This grade may provide an exemption for a particular course at the program.
No Attendance (NA) is given upon failure to attend classes or complete practical or applied components of a course. (NA) configures in CGPA as FF.
