Course Objective

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the economic analysis of the tourism industry. Specific topics will include the following: the factors influencing the demand for tourism, the supply and cost structures in tourism industry, the impact of market structure on tourism businesses, the impact of tourism spending on the regional and national economies, the relationship between the government and the tourism industry.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understand the nature and economic significance of the tourism industry,
2   Examine the factors underlying the demand for tourism,
3   Analyze the factors underlying the supply of tourism products,
4   Evaluate the major elements and indicators of destination competitiveness,
5   Explain the contribution of tourism growth to national product, foreign exchange earnings and employment,
6   Examine costs and benefits of tourism at national and regional levels.
7   Demonstrate an understanding the role government in tourism.
8   Work effectively as part of a team participating and interacting in the group in a productive manner for himself/herself and for the group as a whole.
9   Demonstrate high communication skills in presenting a report.

Assessment Criteria

1. Midterm examination will be based on understanding, synthesis and evaluation of the course topics.
2. Assignments will be based on the knowledge, analysis, problem-solving and evaluation regarding different tourism economics topics.
3. Verbal participation in class discussions will be graded.
4. Presentations will be based on the application of knowledge, analysis, problem-solving and evaluative skills regarding different tourism economics topics. Presentations should have a cover page, thesis statement (i.e., clearly state the point of the cases), an introduction, a brief overview of the company or destination itself, a main focus on the case topic, a discussion on the questions about the cases, and a section of references cited.
