General Description

Dokuz Eylul University was founded according to the Law Number 41 which was promulgated on the official gazette on July 20, 1982 and according to the law on organization of higher education institutions. In Izmir, Dokuz Eylul University is the second state university which was founded after Ege University and it took over the management from the Ministry Of Education, Ministry Of Youth And Sports, The Ministry Of Culture and Tourism and from Ege University. Apart from these foundations, new institutions were founded and it started to work with 24 education units.

Since its foundation, Dokuz Eylul University has developed rapidly. 1992 was its 10th anniversary and in 1992, it had 41 education units in 5 different provinces in the Aegean Region and it made contributions to four new universities for their foundations and these universities are as follows: Aydın Adnan Menderes University, Mugla University, Manisa Celal Bayar University and Pamukkale University in Denizli.

Today, Dokuz Eylul University has got 10 Institutions, 17 Faculties, 3 Vocational Schools, 1 Conservatoire, 6 Vocational Schools, 1 Application and Research Hospital and 50 Application and Research Centres in many different parts of Izmir. It pursues its duties on scientific research studies and its duty in higher education with its qualified community service mentality.

When the research studies and the innovations increase the rivalry increases and the importance of education and the knowledge transfer have been accepted during the rivalry process by Dokuz Eylul University. The mission of Dokuz Eylul University is to create innovations, to provide internationalization and to improve the quality in research studies and in higher education by strengthening the international collaboration with the stakeholders in business life. Thus, DEU aims to make contributions to develop society in economic, cultural and social ways.

Our university has 71319 students and it provides teaching services with its 3281 academic staffs and 3324 administrative staffs.

A world class research and development center has been founded within our university. “Cellular Therapy”, “cancer biology”, “microbiology of genetic diseases” are some of the research fields that are planned by the research and development center.

Joint diploma programmes with some foreign universities are performed in certain departments of DEU Faculty of Maritime Business Administration.

Dokuz Eylül University Distance Education Application and Research Center (DEUZEM) conducts several education programs through internet (deuzem.edu.edu.tr) for the students who want to benefit from learning advantages independently of time and place. Students from different locations of Turkey were given the chance to get education within the scope of 450 person İLİTAM (Bachelor of Theology Completion) in the last education term

Total number of libraries along with the unit libraries opened in Faculties, Vocational Schools and Institutions besides Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Central Library situated in Tınaztepe Campus has been reached to 11, total area of them is 19.248 m², total reader capacity is 2.498 and study room capacity suitable for pandemic is 898.

DEU has the Diploma Supplement Label in 2012 and the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) Label in 2013 by the European Commission.
