General Description

History

Founded in 1983, the Department of Painting offers undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA) degrees. Each year 25 undergraduate and 10 graduate students are accepted to the department through a series of very competitive exams. The staff includes internationally experienced artists and academics who have adopted an individualized and innovative approach to education.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

In undergraduate transfers the provisions of the Regulation concerning the Principles of Transfer between Associate Degree and Undergraduate Degree Programs in Higher Education Institutions, Double Major, Minor and Inter-Institutional Credit Transfer published in the Official Gazette dated 24.4.2010 and numbered 27561 are applied.
In vertical transfers, the provisions of the Regulation concerning the Continuation of Undergraduate Education of Graduates of Vocational Schools and Open Education Associate Degree Programs published in the Official Gazette dated 19.2.202 and numbered 24676 are applied.
In the transfer to Vocational Schools of students who have not completed their undergraduate education, the provisions of the Regulation concerning Obtaining Associate Degree Diploma or Adaptation to Vocational Schools of those who have not completed their undergraduate education, published in the Official Gazette dated 18.3.11989 and numbered 20112, are applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters in 1 year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS.
1- Education is carried out in the faculty with the course passing system.
2- Courses that have not been successfully completed in one academic year are registered first in the next academic year.
3- Absolute evaluation system is applied in the faculty.
4- Semester grade point average (SGPA) is calculated by dividing the number obtained by multiplying the credits of the courses in which the student is enrolled in the relevant semester with the course grade and dividing the total number of credits in that semester.
5- Grade point average is calculated by multiplying the credits of all the courses in which the student is enrolled with the course grade and dividing the number obtained by the total credits.
6- Only the registered courses are taken into account in the calculation of GPA and SGPA. For repeated courses, the final grade obtained from that course is taken into account. In the calculation of the averages, two digits are carried out after the comma.
7- The last grade received from repeated courses is the passing grade. In addition to the maximum course load and not exceeding two courses, the Faculty Administrative Board determines whether or not to take a course and its conditions.

Profile of the Programme

Department of Painting, with a stuff that includes one Professor, 3 Assistant Professor, 2 Lecturer, 4 Research Assistant, has an alternative art education program which blends traditional and contemporary approaches to art practice and theory. The department has 5 painting studios and 1 archive. At the end of each year is held a Graduation Exhibition which displays the works of undergraduate and graduate students.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Students will be able to use and have the knowledge of theoretical and practical informations that are used in plastic arts education.
2   Students will have the knowledge, capability and creativity on contemporary art practices.
3   Students will have the practical capability of visualizing his/her observations and thoughts
4   Students will have the knowledge of choosing the right techniques and methods on their fields and will be able to work on them systematically.
5   In the process of individuality, students will be able to adopt and improve their visual language and their narrative process.
6   Students will learn that a disctintive art approach is a process and it can be improved by original thoughts abided by observing.
7   Students will have the historical and theoretical knowledge of art and will be able to criticize it. Students will be able to utilize disciplines such as; traditional art, history of art, viusal culture, art philosophy and art sociology, in the process of improving their works and career.
8   Students will be able to categorize and give the right value to their esthetic proposals and applications with considering the state of national and international scale.
9   Students will be able to show and display their works on an esthetic level with using and keeping up with the contemporary technologies and new developments.
10   Students will have the knowledge that the creation of art is based on observing and researching and formed by the willpower of synthesizing. It is also being able to take the responsibility an ethical and esthetic knowledge.
11   Students will be able to find and utilize different kinds of information sources on a variety of mediums in the process of their work process.
12   Students will be able use the world we live in; its socio-cultural structure and its inner/outer dynamics in their works and critiques.
13   Students will be able to approach and comment on the state of today's art world, new trends with a judgmental attitude, if necessary.
14   Students will have the knowledge and capability of providing the harmony between quality of art and its environment, when forming the public art creation process.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Our graduates, in addition to exhibiting with galleries as professional artists, work as consultants, coordinators or managers in various arts institutions and civic initiatives. They also work as editors and writers in art journals and publishing companies. Our graduates, who are deemed worthy of international competitions, biennials, group exhibitions, prestige awards and artist scholarships, are also invited to such activities as jury members or consultants. Our graduates, who want to continue their careers as educators, work as faculty members in many universities around Türkiye.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations regarding the examinations, measurement and evaluation system are defined in the DEU Faculty of Fine Arts Teaching and Examination Application Principles. The minimum grade required to pass a course with credit is 50. Criteria, methods and ratios regarding the evaluation of the courses are presented in the course introduction forms of the relevant course.

Graduation Requirements

1- The student graduates with a grade of at least 50 out of 100.
2- In order to graduate, the student has to complete 240 ECTS of course credits. Elective courses make up at least 60 of the 240-ECTS.
3- The student must have completed the departmental internship in the specified period and time.
