Course Objective

This course aims to help the student to develop an awareness of the decorative (surface) and illustrative (depth) components of painting and to comprehend the relationship between form, composition and expression by addressing the basic principles of plastic form within the logic of visual thinking.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   In this course the student is expected to explore the decorative (surface) and illustrative (depth) components of painting;
2   the perceptual characteristics of the visual field;
3   the elements of composition such as line, surface (2D shape), depth (3D shape), value, color; and
4   the principles of composition such as balance, scale, contrast, pattern, emphasis, movement and rhythm, unity, etc.
5   and ultimately, the relationship between form, composition and expression

1 Properties and concepts of the work surface: corners, center and connecting axes, weight, balance and placement Variation, movement, active negative space
2 Eelements: of composition: point, line, surface (2D shape), depth (3D shape), value, color. Notan (light-dark balance) composition study
3 Principles of Composition: Balance, Scale, Contrast, Emphasis, Movement and Rhythm, Unity. Notan (value) composition study
4 Two components of painting: surface and depth Landscape study (notan)
5 design of the surface with line
6 design of the surface with Line
7 Designi of the surface with value (black and white composition)
8 Design of the surface with value (black and white composition)
9 Sahape interpretation, reduction, value zones
10 Painting formats and Directional Energy
