General Description

History

The Department of International Relations was founded in 1992 within the Faculty of Business and from that time on has continually developed. It is the oldest international relations department in İzmir.
The aim of the Department is to educate students who can approach the dynamics of international relations and political developments from an academic perspective and efficiently practice their ability of analytical and critical thinking. In addition, students learn skills such as gathering and analysing data and expressing their ideas clearly. The Department of International relations has four subdepartments: Political History, Law of Nations, EU Law, EU Politics and International Relations. The medium of instruction is English.

High school diploma, placement through a national-wide Student Selection Examination, DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test (Minimum 65) or TOEFL-IBT (minimum 72) or equivalent.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The Bachelors Degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A.) of 2.00/4.00 and 240 ECTS. Regulations arrange the details of the requirements:

Profile of the Programme

In the initial three years of the program, the students are expected to take the main courses of international relations. In their third and fourth years, students choose courses from the major subfields of international relations such as comparative politics, international law, European studies and other regional studies. Furthermore, the program facilitates the development of communication and computer skills. As a result of its wide variety of courses, our students develop critical analytical skills that allow them to explain, compare, and generalize about political phenomena in a broad range of countries, employing the key methodologies of the discipline.
Under Graduate School of Social Sciences, the department offers MA and PhD degrees in International Relations. Our curriculum in MA and PhD combines theoretical and empirical approaches to international relations. Our courses are designed to inform and inspire students to think critically about significant historical, political, economic and social issues in contemporary world politics. The Department has 18 academics in total.
International Relations Department offers a minor in International Relations to students who are interested in diversifying their career options through the field of International Relations. The objective is fostering intellectual excellence by integrating disciplines in the social sciences. Meanwhile, our time call for new generation of leaders, educated about the dynamics of international relations and proficient in foreign languages as well as international affairs. Students enrolled in any one of the DEU Faculty of Business departments other than International Relations Department with a 3.00 GPA might apply and receive a minor in International Relations fulfilling all other requirements in minor program regulations. To declare a minor in International Relations students should take and complete 8 compulsory courses with an overall GPA 2.50.

Key Learning Outcomes

1	To have the basic knowledge of the disciplines that international relations is based upon (economics, law, sociology, political science).
2	To be able to inform authorities and institutions in the area of international relations; to be able to transfer ideas and proposals verbally and in writing to experts and nonexperts, either in Turkish or in English.
3	To be able to speak and write English at a medium level (Common European Framework of Reference Level B 2) of fluency efficiently.
4	To be able to use computer skills at an advanced level.
5	To take the responsibility as a group team member and as an individual to solve multidimensional problems.
6	To assess critically the acquired knowledge and skills, and be able to improve them.
7	To have ethical and social values and apply them in the stages throughout the processes of collecting, interpreting, disseminating and implementing data related to international relations.
8	To be able to examine, interpret data and assess concepts and ideas with the scientific methods in the area of international relations.
9	To acquire basic conceptual and theoretical knowledge, and be able to use theoretical and practical knowledge in the areas of international relations.
10	To be able to interpret history of international relations and to be able to use the acquired knowledge critically.
11	To be able to recognize regional and global issues/problems in different subfields of international relations and to be able to develop solutions based on research and scientific evidence.
12	To be able to use the acquired knowledge in the area of Turkish political structure and foreign policy critically.
13	To be able to use diplomatic communication skills with authorities and institutions.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of the International Relations Department of Dokuz Eylül University have various opportunities for employment in the public and private sector. In the private sector, our department has graduates who work in finance, sales and marketing, and human resources departments of banks, independent auditing firms and companies with foreign trade activities; as well as in telecommunications and media. We also have graduates in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pursuing their careers as diplomats. Our graduates also work in various state institutions and non-govenmental organizations as EU specialists or foreign trade specialists. Those who have preferred an academic career, are working on their masters or PhD degrees in universities at home and abroad. Some of them are working as research assistants particularly at departments of International Relations, Political Science and Public Administration.

In order to meet international standards, four course categories have been defined in the undergraduate program of International Relations. Faculty Core Courses (22%) : These courses aim to support core courses of the profession and to develop transferable skills. Departmental Core Courses (22%): These are the fundamental courses of the profession. Departmental Electives (53%): Courses aiming to extend education in accordance with the students relevant area of interest. Unrestricted Electives (3%): Courses aiming at providing the students a broad flexibility for individual development and career choices. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations for examination and grading are arranged in the fourth part of DEU Faculty of Business Educational and Examinational Regulations (http://isletme.deu.edu.tr/kurumsal/ana-menu-ogrenciler/deu-isletme-fakultesi-sinav-ve-uygulama-esaslari).
The lowest grade to be successful in a credit course is DD. Other grades; Incomplete (I) accorded to students who, although otherwise successful, have failed to complete the required assignments for a course. A student receiving an incomplete grade for any course must make up for the deficiencies within 30 days after submitting the grades to Registrars Office. Otherwise, the grade I automatically becomes FF. Satisfactory (S) accorded to students who are successful in non-credit courses. Unsatisfactory (U) accorded to students who are unsuccessful in non-credit courses. Exempt ( E) is given to students who transfer to the program from another, after the equivanlence of courses they have taken previously is recommended by the dean/director and approved by the faculty board. This grade may provide an exemption for a particular course at the program.
No Attendance (NA) is given upon failure to attend classes or complete practical or applied components of a course. (NA) configures in CGPA as FF.
