Course Objective

The aim of the course is to introduce learners to the major events and themes in modern European history from the mid-19th century to the end of the Cold War. 19th century revolutions, unification in Germany and Italy, imperialism, World War I, the Bolshevik Revolution, the Great Depression, rise of fascism, World War II, Cold War and superpower rivalry, decolonization, and the collapse of communism are amongst the main issues that are to be dealt in this course.

Assessment Criteria

The learner will:
1. Clearly describe and explain major actors, events, trends and periods taught in class.
2. Locate individual events in the greater historical picture of the evolution of European state system between 1870 and 1990.
3. Distinguish and interrelate various factors (economic, political, cultural, religious etc.) in the making of history.
