Course Objective

To gain an understanding of Turkish politics with the help of documentaries including Demirkırat Documentaries (Turkish Politics from early 1930s until the end of 1960s with an emphasis on transition to multi-party period and its end with the 1960 coup), 12 Mart Documentaries (The increase in the leftist and rightist movements in Turkish politics during the 1960s and 12th of March Coup by memorandum), 12 Eylül Documentaries (Chaotic years of 1970s and 12th of September Coup) and 28 Şubat Documentaries (rise of new internal threats in Turkish politics and February 1997 indirect coup).

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   understand the factors leading to the transition to the multi-party period in 1950
2   understand the economic and political factors leading to the 1960 coup
3   understand the rise of rightist and leftist movements and the polarization in Turkish politics throughout the 1970s
4   understand the rise of political Islam and PKK attacks through 1990s

Lecturer will hold a discussion session with the students in every class meeting concerning the documentaries. Presentations made by the students and papers written by the students.
