Course Objective

The aim of the course is to introduce the students the main principles and major issues of Turkish foreign policy from World War I until the end of the Cold War. The course will concentrate on different periods starting fron the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey to relatively autonomous foreign policy of the early years of the Republic, pro-western foreign policies after 1945 and and the relative autonomy of the 1960s, 1970s, and pro-western policies of the 1980s. Each period will be examined by focusing on Turkey's relations with different regions such as West (Europe and mainly the USA), the Soviet Union and the Middle East.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To gain an understanding of the main principles and the major issues in Turkish foreign policy starting from World War I until the end of the Cold War.
2   To be able to comprehend the interests and positions of key actors shaping Turkish foreign policy during the periods under examination.
3   To be able to assess the external and internal factors that shape Turkish foreign policy.
4   To be able to evaluate the outcomes of Turkish foreign policy.
