General Description

History

Dokuz Eylül University, the Department of Translation and Interpreting was established in the academic year 2015-16 under the roof of the Faculty of Letters.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years (excluding one year of English Preparatory School), 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The language of education is English. The aim of the four-year Translation and Interpreting undergraduate programme is to train future translators/interpreters as professionals who can compete in both public and private sectors with the skills, knowledge, and professional ethics required for the profession.Upon successful completion of this programme, students will acquire the following knowledge, skills and competences.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   mastering the conceptual and theoretical knowledge on translation and interpreting
2   being able to apply, construe, and analyse their conceptual knowledge
3   Understanding and analysing the grammatical, lexical, sentential, textual, and semantic structure of source and target languages and producing texts in these languages
4   acquiring the skills of writing and speaking in English at an advanced level
5   being able to construe written and verbal products of source language and cultural system and compare them with the target language
6   having knowledge of various linguistic, literary and historical approaches devised in history of thought and being able to use this knowledge in textual analysis and text production
7   acquiring the strategies and methods pertaining to translation and interpreting, implementing and producing them when necessary
8   acquiring research skills and incorporating sources of information during the translation process
9   being able to make decisions, adopting a critical attitude, and displaying creativity during the translation/interpreting process.
10   acquiring terminological and technical competence in target languages by practicing translation and interpreting in different areas of speciality
11   acquiring skills of working individually and in a team.
12   recognizing the knowledge and skills pertaining to the professional life of a translator and an interpreter and the necessary technologies and computer software and using them effectively.
13   being able to speak a second foreign language at an intermediate level
14   acquiring life-long learning skills

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

This degree enables the holder to exercise the profession in the public or private enterprises.57% of the total credits come from required classes, while electives comprise the remaining 43% of credits.
All the courses in the program are one-term classes. The language of education is English.
1st and 3rd year students must take 2 (two) departmental electives at each semester. 2nd and 4th grade students must take 3 (three) departmental electives at each semester.
Students must take a third foreign language (German, French or Russian) as a restricted elective in the first semester and proceed in the same language in the following semesters.
Students must take at least 1 (one) unrestricted elective from the Faculty Electives (or upon request from any other Department) at 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th semesters.
The students are required to do internship during the summer at the end of the 3rd year. The internship will appear in the student s academic report as 3 ECTS. Students who complete their internship during the summer after their sixth term shall submit their internship report in the beginning of the seventh term.
Students who will take translation or interpreting courses at the 4th year will be qualified through an oral exam conducted by the Department at the end of the 6th semester.
Students are required to take a minimum of 152 National Credits or 240 ECTS in order to graduate.
In the first and second years of the program, courses are geared more towards enhancing the students linguistic skills and equipping them to prepare for translation. In the third and fourth years, courses focus more on translation and specialized translation.

Students who will take translation or interpreting courses at the 4th year will be qualified through an oral exam conducted by the Department at the end of the 6th semester. Students are required to take a minimum of 152 National Credits or 240 ECTS in order to graduate. In the first and second years of the program, courses are geared more towards enhancing the students? linguistic skills and equipping them to prepare for translation. In the third and fourth years, courses focus more on translation and specialized translation.

The assessment methods used for each course are defined in the Course Syllabus Form prepared by the Instructor of the course and included in the Information Package. The related articles of the Regulations on Dokuz Eylul University Upper Secondary Education, Undergraduate Education and Examinations and Education and Examination Principles of Faculty of Letters are applied. Graduation Requirements

The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00/4.00 and 240 ECTS.
