General Description

History

Department of Psychology was founded in 2009 and it started to accept undergraduate students in 2013-2014 academic years. Undergraduate program in Psychology consists of 30 % of English courses; thus, preparation school in English is obligatory. In terms of graduate education opportunities, there are two master's programs in Psychology and Clinical Psychology, as well as a Psychology Doctorate program.

Specific Admission Requirements

Providing high school diploma and being placed in the program as a result of the Student Selection Examination conducted through the central system at the national level. Student placement procedures through central system are carried out by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Relevant information on the placement examinations is available at http://www.osym.gov.tr

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK) The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylul University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total. In order for students to complete their education successfully in our faculty, their GPA (Grade Point Average) should be at least 2.00. Final year students who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 are entitled to take a one-course examination in order to increase the GPA if they are able to fulfill the condition of a GPA of 2.00 from the courses included in the program of the last four semesters. Those who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 through one-course examination are entitled to take a mid-term exam, final exam or make-up exam from the courses of the last four semesters. The students benefit from this right of examination in the exam period during the semester in which the courses are opened. The students who would like to benefit from this right of examination declare the exams that they will take at the beginning of the semester during registration.
In order to complete from the Undergraduate Program of History Department, it is required that the students complete all the courses equivalent of 240 ECTS offered in the educational plan of 8 semesters, and they have the GPA with 2.00/4.00.

Profile of the Programme

The objective of Undergraduate Program in Psychology is to present students basic psychology knowledge and skills of scientific thinking, to provide them notion of transferring those information and skills to relevant people and organizations and to acquire them questioning and producing knowledge on graduation. It is aimed to have graduates who are able to reach and comprehend current and contemporary theoretical information and applications in psychology, to administer them in line with ethical principles, to transfer them in service and in doing so to have personal and social awareness and professional responsibility.
Undergraduate Program in Psychology is a 4-year and 8-semester program. Students are expected to take certain numbers of compulsory and elective courses for graduation. Medium of language in 30 % of the undergraduate courses is in English; other courses are given in Turkish.

Key Learning Outcomes
1. To be able to describe basic concepts, theories, approaches and assumptions in psychology and other relevant disciplines.
2. To able to comprehend history of psychology discipline, development of scientific methods and to discuss possible similarities and differences among those main approaches.
3. To be able to define basic theoretical approaches and their assumptions, to compare them and to express their main contributions and limitations.
4. To be able to have basic knowledge on main applications in psychology, to understand basic principles in psychological assessment with awareness of its possible contribution and limitations, and to have necessary skills about interview techniques, observation and writing reports.
5. To be able to follow recent developments in area, to reach scientific literature findings via different sources, to express his/her knowledge in psychology in an efficient manner
6. To be able to describe quantitative and qualitative scientific research methods, to acquire necessary skills on research design, data collection, statistical analysis, interpretation, writing and discussion
7. To be able to comprehend scientific thinking notion, critical thinking and reasoning and to be open-minded to human behavior, cognition and experiences in different levels.
8. To be able to realize differences and similarities among him/herself and other people with various age, gender, ethnic background, national identity, sexual orientation, disability and socio-economic status.
9. To be able to realize his/her personal responsibility of having awareness about interpersonal relationships and social situations and problems and to present possible solutions for those events in line with personal knowledge on psychology.
10. To able to describe professional ethics, values and standards in psychology, to administer/follow them into his/her work, to realize possible ethical dilemmas in administrations and to make professional decisions on those ethical principles.

Key Learning Outcomes

1	Could define fundamental concepts, terms and hypothesis in his/her mastery area of psychology and the other disciplines which have common studies; could compare the similarities and differences between psychology and those disciplines.
2	Could be familiar with the history of psychology; know the historical developments of the methods of psychology; could discuss the theoritecal discrepencies in the discipline.
3	Could know the basic assumptions of fundamental theoretical approaches and perspectives in his/her mastery area of psychology, could compare these theories, could express the similarities and differences, contributions and limitations
4	Could have knowledge of the applications to real world in his/her mastery area of psychology. Could be aware of the limitations of this field and could contribute to the solutions of these limitations using various methods.
5	Could follow developments in his/her mastery area of psychology in the world and in Turkey, could be able to have knowledge of research in literature. Could express his/her knowledge of psychology by an effective expression and language skills; could be able to access to various resources and databases.
6	Could have knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods, could have skills and experiences of research design configuration in psychology, analysis method selection, data collection, data interpretation, statistical reporting, and discussion.
7	Could have understanding of scientific thinking, skills for learning, critical thinking and judgement; could keep alive his/her curiosity and interest about human behaviour, cognition and experiences.
8	Could realize the similar and different aspects between him and different groups on the basis of age, gender, race, ethnical group, national identity, language, religion, sexual orientation, disability and socioeconomic status, could criticize his own opinions and be open to new ideas.
9	Could have awareness and sensitivity in interpersonal relations and social events and problems and could provide explanations and solutions based on his/her knowledge of psychology.
10	Could know the ethical principles and values of psychology and the ones specific to his/her mastery area of psychology, could work in accordance with these principles; could be aware of ethical dilemmas in the field, and could take his/her decisions on the basis of the relevant ethical principles.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates in this Psychology program will get diploma in Bachelor degree in Psychology. This degree provides opportunity to work as psychologist in various organizations of state and private sectors such as organizations in health, education, industry, social work and research centers. Graduates might work in governmental organizations, including Ministries of Health, Justice, Internal Affairs, Security and Police Departments etc. As specific requirements are met, they could also work in Ministry of Education as well. However, in order to increase personal knowledge in specific subfield psychology and to work as an expert in relevant area, students are strongly encouraged to get master degree in various subfields of psychology (i.e., clinical, social, development, cognitive, experimental, industrial/organizational psychology etc.)

Access to Further Studies

The students who have completed their undergraduate education successfully can continue their studies in graduate programs (second cycle) in their own field or related fields provided that they pass the examination ALES and have sufficient knowledge of English.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The assessment methods used for each course are defined in the Course Syllabus Form prepared by the Instructor of the course and included in the Information Package. The related articles of the Regulations on Dokuz Eylul University Upper Secondary Education, Undergraduate Education and Examinations and Education and Examination Principles of Faculty of Letters are applied.

Graduation Requirements

The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and 240 ECTS. Graduation requirements are as stated in the chapter Qualification requirement and regulations.
