DEGREE PROGRAMMES

: Gemmology and Jewelery Design

General Description

History

This program has been initiated in 1983 1984 academic education year under the name of Precious Stone and Novel Metal Manufacturing Program of Technical Programs Division of Izmir Multidisciplinary Vocational School of Dokuz Eylul University. After this, it is the first vocational school based on jewellery industry among the private and state universities. Precious Stone and Novel Metal Manufacturing Program advanced its educational content, academically requirements, teaching staff and its technical sources to the modern limits. As a result of this, in 2006 its named has changed to Gemmology and Jewellery Program to give more meaning to its name. Later in 2010, its name has changed to Gemmology, Jewellery and Design by the higher educational department (YOK).

It is based on a two year, fourteen week semester system. In these two years, academic courses, laboratories and also industry based learning are educated. The curriculum has designed to introduce the trainees to the fundamental concepts of jewellery and industrial chemistry as well as applicable hands on practice and experiments.

It is aimed to supply the needs of the technician who is selfemployed, in the present and future. Thus, the jewellery technician as a member of industrial jewellery team is expected to have much more knowledge and predictions than skilled workers.

This programme aims to graduate students understand jewellery and gemmology sciences, works with gold, silver metals, makes both handmade and using casting jewellery and use CAD programs(JewelCAD, Rhino, Matrix, Vray) to create their own original jewellery designs. In addition, the graduated students are involved in the buying and selling of stones, metals, or finished pieces of jewellery. Similar occupations include retail salespersons and sales representatives in wholesale trade. On the other hand, our graduated jewellers typically do the handiwork required to produce a piece of jewellery, while our graduated gemmologists and laboratory graders can analyze, describe, and certify the quality and characteristics of gem stones. They may work in gemmological laboratories or as quality control experts for retailers, importers, or manufacturers. After using microscopes, computerized tools, and other grading instruments to examine gem stones or finished pieces of jewellery, they write reports certifying that the items are of a particular quality. Many jewellers also study gemmology to become familiar with the physical properties of the gem stones with which they work.

According to this, the main aim of this programme is to graduate students not just having theoretical knowledge of Jewellery and Gemmology but also having practical usage of this field, knowing commerce of jewellery and in the right situation building their own business in this field.
