Course Objective

In general, to instruction 10 sub-branches of gemmology, in particular, to teach coloured precious stones scientifically, to show facet cutting techniques and to make common researches intended for these materials. Also, to gain knowledge and ability to work in gemological testing laboratories.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be able to describe gemmology and its sub-branches.
2   Be able to grade colored precious stones scientifically.
3   Be able to indicate facet cutting with the main lines.
4   Be able to realize synthetic production of colored stones.
5   Be able to present report on colored precious stones by collecting data obtaining from scientific researches.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Meaning of the mineralogical and gemmological investigation. Methods of the mineralogical investigation and their usability on the gemmological investigation.
2 Gemmological investigation rules of the transparent (translucent) and opaque gemstones. Definition of the light. The relationship between light and colour. Diffraction and reflection.
3 Concept of the natural, artificial and imitation. Their significance on gemstones.
4 Colouration theories in gemstones. Crystal field theory molecular orbital theory, colour centers, band theory, physical optic theory.
5 Coloured gemstones evaluation criteria (naturally, colour, opacity, transparency impurity, largeness, the places of production, cut shape). Distinguish to transparent, translucent and opaque gemstones.

All students must attend to the conducted courses with at least 80%. During the course and in the exams, all kind of making a copy are evaluated comprising a discipline crime.
