General Description

History

Architectural education in the city of Izmir has first been offered in 1963 by Aegean Engineering and Architectural Private School, which has been founded at Buca, Izmir. Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Architecture has then been established in 1992, on the 3rd of July. However, the foundation of the Faculty as party of Faculty of Engineering and Architecture Alsancak dates earlier, to the year 1971. The Faculty has been moved to its new building in Buca, Tınaztepe, Kaynaklar Campus in 2004.
Since the beginning of undergraduate architectural education with 12 students in 1972, the Faculty has gone through a number of new developments that have various legal and institutional reflections. One of such is the start of undergraduate education in urban planning with the foundation of the Department of City and Regional Planning in 1979. In time, the two Departments of Architecture and City Planning has taken a prominent place in the establishment of different institutional bodies as part of first the Aegean University Engineering Sciences, Academy of Engineering and Architecture (1971), secondly Aegean University Faculty of Fine Arts (1975), then Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (1982), and finally Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Architecture (1992). Since its inception the department has implemented formal education program. The education language of Bachelors Degree program is Turkish. There are graduate and doctorate (Phd) programs at the department of the city and regional planning in the Institute of Science as well as undergraduate program.

Specific Admission Requirements

Placement High-school diploma and score of Student Selection Examination organizing at national level. Foreign language preparatory program with one year period is applied within a quota to students who wish join the program. Duration of foreign language preparatory program is not included shown in the curriculum column.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

There is no special condition for the program beyond existing general rules at the university level. Regulation Regarding Principles of Transferring Between Programs Level of Associates Degree and Bachelors Degree in Higher Education Institutions, Double Major and Minor programs, and Making Credit Transfer Between Institutions and Assessment Terms concerned undergraduate transfer defining by Senate of Dokuz Eylul University are implemented for students wanting undergraduate transfer to Dokuz Eylul University from higher education institutions in Turkey and foreign countries.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

A student is required being grade point average at least 2.00, completing 240 ECTS total, being successful from all courses, completing successfully urban research training (20 workdays 4 weeks) and office training (20 workdays 4 weeks) to successfully complete his/her education and receive a diploma. It has been evaluated according to relative grade system in our department. Profile of the Programme

The aim of education program is to educate qualified people and urban planners who are sensitive to man, nature and cultural processes, have the required professional knowledge and skills and adopt a professionally ethical behaviour. Dokuz Eylul University, Faculty of Architecture, Department of City and Regional Planning aims at conceiving of the existing economical, social and cultural practices on the one hand, and producing of new alternatives derived from potentials on the other. For this purpose, courses related to urban design, urban planning, mathematics, economy, sociology, statistics, computer, law, ecology, urban geography, history of settlements, transportation, city management, architectural principles, infrastructure, urban conservation and renewal are given in the program. The courses are supported by modern teaching tools and supplies. In the Department the education is full-time, and daytime and the language of education is Turkish. The Department have a project-based curriculum and the education program is supported by internships. The studies produced in project studios include the process of in-depth research studies. The data obtained in accordance with the information produced by the students in the course is used directly in project work. The project courses are carried out in the form of studio work and the projects are evaluated by the jury system at the end of the Semester. In the Department, due to the nature of the project based education, one to one relationship can be established between lecturers and students. Thus, different options for each student on an individual basis can be produced during the creation process. On the one hand the integration of theory and practice can be provided; experience created can be converted into knowledge through Revolving Fund and the Research Projects on the other.

Starting in 2011, The Bologna Process (European Higher Education Area adaptation efforts) that provides travelling of the countrys citizens in the European Higher Education Area in order to educate in higher education or work easily has started. Diploma Supplement can be given to the students who will graduate since 2012. Dokuz Eylul University has obtained Diploma Supplement Label and ECTS Label. The department supports the exchange of students and academicians by making bilateral agreements with well-known and prestigious international institutions, thereby aiming to increase the knowledge and experience gained. The department has students and academicians who go to universities abroad within the scope of Erasmus Student and Academician Exchange Program. In addition, student exchange practices with domestic universities continue within the scope of the Farabi Program. Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Architecture Department of City and Regional Planning academic staff, as of the Spring Semester of 2019-2020, 7 Professors, 8 Associate Professors, 5 Dr. Lecturers, 1 Lecturer Dr. and 5 Research Assistants, with a staff of 26 teaching staff.

1   Developing the ability of analytical thinking and skills in following up national/international literature necessary for carrying out researches.
2   Developing the skills to use qualitative and quantitative data in planning and design.
3   Ability to design, carry out, analyse and interpret the results of multi-disciplinary urban researches.
4   Ability of critical thinking (Developing clear questions, using abstraction techniques in expressing an opinion, ability of evaluating opposite opinions, drawing to well-examined outcomes and testing these with similar criteria and standards).
5   Developing foresight and creativity in spatial planning in the light of solid data and other hints.
6   Ability to comprehend the occupational and ethic responsibilities and values.
7   Ability to understand and interpret the legal responsibilities of planners in legislation and theoretical issues related to public use, ownership rights, user rights, urban governance, and planning.
8   Ability to plan and design taking into consideration the natural and artificial characteristics of land and the principles of the use of physical sources.
9   Ability to evaluate language, terminology, methods and techniques regarding to visual perception and regulatory systems in planning and design.
10   Ability to mediate, resolve conflicts and work together in multi-disciplinary teams within the framework of participatory planning.
11   Ability to adopt planning and design principles that will improve the quality of life and meet the user needs at the urban design scale.
12   Ability to plan taking into consideration the local needs, optimal development rights and population densities, design criteria and relevant regulations and urban standards at different scales and scopes.
13   Ability to achieve and evaluate spatial planning practice within social, economic, cultural and political framework.
14   Ability to plan regarding the needs in urban and rural areas at different scales.
15   Creating and sustaining healthy living places through planning and urban design decisions regarding and preserving naturally and culturally sensitive areas.
16   Understanding the differences in needs, demands, and behavioural, social and spatial patterns that characterize different cultures.
17   Ability of visual presentation (including the ability to process data through various techniques where hand-drawn and computer aided design techniques are used for achieving proper presentations; ability to represent different phases of planning and design including spatial analysis and synthesis ).

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Alumni of the department are employed both in public and private sectors. Data about employment profiles of graduates is not acquired.
Our alumni can be employed both in public and private sectors. Major public institutions employing our alumni are ; The Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning, some other ministries, related and provincial directorates of these ministries (such as DSI), municipalities and development agencies. In private sector, there are architecture, construction and development offices, real estate valuation firms, banks, et cetera. Our graduates can also establish their own offices/firms of planning and design, or construction.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

There are 43 must and 52 elective courses available under the City and Regional Planning Undergraduate Program. The share of elective courses is 45% within the total number of available courses, and the share of must courses is 55%. Each student is to complete 12 elective courses prior to graduation. The share of must courses to be completed by each student is 78% in number, and the share of elective courses is 22%. There are 8 must courses required by Dokuz Eylul University in the program: ATA 1001 Principles of Atatürk and History of Revolution I (ATA 1001 Atatürk İlkeleri ve İnkılap Tarihi I), ATA 1002 Principles of Atatürk and History of Revolution II (ATA 1002 Atatürk İlkeleri ve İnkılap Tarihi II), TDL 1001 Turkish Language I (TDL 1001 Türk Dili I), TDL1001 Turkish Language I (TDL 1001 Türk Dili I), YDİ 1001 Foreign Language I (YDİ 1001 Yabancı Dil I, YDİ 1002 Foreign Language II (YDİ 1001Yabancı Dil II), İSG 4001 İş Sağlığı ve Güvenliği I (Occupational Health and Safety I), İSG 4002 İş Sağlığı ve Güvenliği II (Occupational Health and Safety II) There is not a pool of elective courses at the Faculty level. There are 52 undergraduate level elective courses offered in the department. The students can take elective courses from other departments. All courses are semester-wise. The studio (project) courses are application oriented. All the studio (project) courses and internships have prerequisites. The students have to succeed in prerequisite studio (project) courses in order to take the following studio (project) course. There are two required internships in the undergraduate program: PLN 2999 Office Internship (PLN 2999 Büro Stajı) and PLN 3994 Office Internship (PLN 3994 Planlama Bürosu Stajı). The Office Internship and The Planning Office Internship can be completed in public or private planning offices or in professional and research projects conducted by the department. PLN 2112 Planning Project II (PLN 2112 Şehir Planlama Projesi II) is the prerequisite for PLN 2999 Office Internship, and PLN 3112 Planning Project IV (PLN 2112 Şehir Planlama Projesi II) is the prerequisite for PLN 3994 Planning Office Internship.
