Course Objective

The course aims to introduce non-residential areas that are one of the urban land use types. It also aims to explain the development, planning and interpret urban design principals of those areas within social and economical contexts

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define the urban non-residential areas that are one the urban land use types,
2   Identify the urban non-residential areas within the Turkish legal context,
3   Explain the transformation of non-residential areas within historical context
4   Describe the urban non-residential areas as products of social-economica and political products
5   .Interpret the design and planning principals of urban non-residential areas.

1 City and Change: Legal terminology about urban non-residential areas; samples from different Municipality regulations about urban planning
2 Planning of Industrial areas: Industrialization process (In developed and developing countries); types of industry; the the location criteria of industry
3 Principals of locational preferences in industrial areas.
4 Organized Industry: Industrial Districts; Small Scaled Industry; Location preferences of Organized Industry and Design of Organized Industrial Areas
5 Field survey
6 Science and Technology parks: The structure of Science and Technology parks; the legal framework for technology parks; establishment reasons; the establishment criteria of tecnoparks, samples
7 The legal framework for Organised Industrial Areas
8 Definition of City Centers; Design principals of city centers; planning of city centers according to legal framework
9 The commercial structure of the metropolitan city and stratification of city centers
10 Mid-Term Exam
11 Models of commercial area planning
12 Development of shopping centers (US samples), Development of Shopping Centers in Europe and UK
13 Development of City Centers in Turkish Case.
