Course Objective

This course aims to provide students with the awareness of design elements and principles, the ability to use them, the ability to think abstractly, and the whole-piece relationship that makes sense of objects. Practices given for this purpose focus on system language concepts such as point, line, plane, texture, color, volume. At the end of this course, students are expected to comprehend order principles such as harmony, contrast, balance, symmetry, asymmetry, repetition, sovereignty, and hierarchy. In addition, it is aimed to create an infrastructure that will allow the development of technical knowledge and equipment with presentation techniques open to creativity.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students, will be able to define the principles of design and order,
2   will be able to express the relationship of the whole and the part ,
3   will be able to illustrate the abstract thinking,
4   will be able to use the technical knowledge
5   will be able to design by using the ability of two and three dimensional perception.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The methods to be applied in the implementation of 2021-2022 Fall Semester PLN 1111 BASIC DESIGN Course within the scope of Blended Learning Approach are as follows:
1. Research and Execution Method
- The course program has a content that blends classical learning methods with digital possibilities.
-The method of conducting the course and the course schedule have been prepared taking into account the 4 hours theoretical and 8 hours practical content of the course.
- The course will be conducted in Synchronously with the Sakai program on Mondays during 1st and 4th lessons.
- During Monday and Thursday afternoon lessons, successive and continuously developing exercises / homework have been designed for the students on the subjects given. Exercises / assignments include drawing assignments that allow students to develop hand-mind coordination, and abstraction practices and assignments that develop from simple to complex as a methodological study that supports the development of the creative process.
The subjects included in the Basic Design course will be handled in 9 subtitles and in 9 separate study packages. In this context, after transferring abstraction as a basic methodological study, POINT, LINE, PLANE, BASIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES AND ELEMENTS, GESTALT PERCEPTION THEORY, COLOR, TEXTURE, PERSPECTIVE, VOLUME were programmed as a work package and sub-study options were created for each.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

This course is evaluated with the semester grade, no final examination is held.

Assessment Criteria

Descriptions, and Sampling are measured by Applications and Homework.
Using and Designing are measured by the Final Project.

Assessment Method
- In the 9 study packages planned during the semester, students will be evaluated with a single grade at the end of four separate stages: TECHNICAL APPLICATION (Application)-RESEARCH (Homework) -CREATIVE PROCESS (Application) and DESIGN (Homework), using the analytical rubric.
- An assignment title will be opened on the Sakai program for all of the assignments. Students will be expected to upload their homework as PDF / JPG / JPEG to this site until a specified date and time.
- Note weights of 9 work packages will be equal. The arithmetic average of these 9 grades will be taken in determining the grade to be considered as the year grade.
- At the end of the term, a final study has been designed in which students can fully convey their knowledge and experience gained in 9 study packages. The final study, which is planned to last four weeks in total, will be based on both group work and individual performances of the students.
- Final project evaluation will be made in the form of a openned or closed jury that depends on pandemic conditions and with the participation of all executive instructors.

The theoritical presentations of the course will be continued with synchronicity distance education, exercised will be contined in classrooms and studios with face-to-face learning .
