General Description

History

Faculty of law was established within Ege Univesity in 1978. It started to undergraduate education at the same year( 15 October 1978). In 1982, faculty of Law parted from Ege University and then ıt has been proceeding its education activity in Dokuz Eylül University. Faculty which is situated in Buca Tınaztepe Campus, is the third Faculty of Law in Turkey in consideration of the date of establishment. Today, number of lecturer which is eight in the establishment year of faculty close to hundred. Vocational Collage of Justice has been also proceeding education activity in the same area since 1983 as depending on Faculty. Faculty of Law with quota of 480 students is at the upper place among the Faculty of Law in Turkey.

Specific Admission Requirements

Acceptance and registration requirements are explained article 11 of Regulation of Dokuz Eylül University Associate and Undergraduate Educatıon. İn general, registration conditions are to have high school diploma and deserve to be placed in Faculty according to result of university entrance examwhich is done countywide.
SPECIAL STUDENTS: According to article 12 of regulation, it can be given the permission of take course with decision of The Faculty Administration Committee for increasing their knowledge about definite issue to someone who are found adequate for following the lessons which are opened in accordance with provision of applicable legislation and other University students. These students have to obey the whole rules which were determined for registered lecture and pay tuition fee which is designated by The University Administration Committee. They dont benefit the rights of studentship. It isnt given diploma to them but give a document which shows their situation by The Faculty Administration Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

In Higher Education Institutions, recognition of previous learning, vertical, horizontal and transition in University are accrued within Regulation on Principles of Transfer between Associate and Undergraduate Programs, Double Major, Minor and Credit Transfer Between Institutions. Dokuz Eylül University Double Major Directive also obtain in this respect.
Vertical transfers From Vocational Collage of Justice to Faculty are being done within the framework of Regulations of Vocational Collages and Correspondence Schools Associate Programs Continue to Undergraduate Education which was published on The Official Gazette which is 19.02.2002 dated and numbered 24676 .
Exemption exam are held for foreign language lectures which are in instructional plan of Faculty at the beginning of academic term. Students who are successful are exempt from related lesson.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

It is explained Article 10 and continuing articles of Code of Practice of Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Law Education and Examination.
All courses require to complicate successfully.
There is no obligation to do internship during the education period. Nevertheless, For being lawyer, notary, judge or prosecutor is required to be done internship in related institutions.
There is no obligation of preparing the final project.
Minimum AKTS Credits: For per year 60, 240 credits in total.

Profile of the Programme

It trains legists who absorb/interiorize the principles of Universal Law, have comprehensive knowledge of basic concepts ,rules and law legislation who can evaluate legally by following national and international improvements and can produce solution, can solve by confirming question of law and conflicts , are equipped with legal knowledge and talent of legal reasoning who can give the lead, have a talent of clarification on legal issues to individual and society and critical thinking .
Some of the basic lessons which are thought in Faculty are, Introduction to Law, Civil Law, Constitutional Law, Law of Obligation, Criminal Law, Administrative Law, Commercial Law, Civil Procedure Law, Tax Law and Labor Law.
In general, researching area of Faculty is current legal arrangement which are located in public and private law fields, theories and manners of implementation.
Journal of Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Law which scientific studies done in Faculty and countywide has been being broadcasted regularly.
Faculty is in cooperation with all public and private institutions that operate in the field of law. Within this framework, common studies and research are done with institutions such as Ministry of Justice, Council of Judges and Public Prosecutors, İzmir Bar Association, İzmir And Karşıyaka Judiciary, Institution of Forensic Medicine, Penal Institution where are in İzmir etc. Faculty has agreements with various University in Germany, French, Spain, Poland, Slovenia, Latvia and Netherlands within the program of Erasmus +. Student transfer can be done with other national faculties within Farabi Student Exchange Program.
Faculty students can make benefit from social and sport facilities which are located in Tınaztepe Campus. There is a comprehensive library which has foreign languages and periodical parts. There is also a court which students find an opportunity to practice their theoretical knowledge with lecturer.

1   Having the skill of performing a legal profession as a lawyer interiorizing the fundamental legal principles as rule of law, supremacy of law, justice, freedom of justice, equality and adopting universal principles of law.
2   Endeavoring for a human rights-based, democratic, secular and social legal system.
3   Recognizing the social, professional and scientific ethical principles.
4   Having the information about legal terminology and Turkish legislation, gaining knowledge by following the publication related to law.
5   Identifying and solving the legal disputes by evaluating the legal concepts with scientific methods; making arguments and suggestions depend on facts and researches.
6   Having the legal knowledge and perception supported by jurisprudence, textbooks containing current information and other scientific resources.
7   Following the social developments with having opinion and knowledge about the legal, historical, economic, social and cultural dimensions of current affairs and problems.
8   Having the competency of interpreting legal rules about the relations between the individual and the state.
9   Analyzing the historical development of the rights of individuals, societies and the documents that outcome through this process.
10   Having the competency of using professional foreign language and Turkish (orally and written) to express opinions and proposals about legal issues, regarding the mutual information exchange between people and entities.
11   Sharing the opinions on all occasions for promoting a higher legal consciousness of people in a society.
12   Appraising the importance, functions and principles of the jurisdiction.
13   Having the competency of utilizing the methodology of law to solve the legal disputes and problems.
14   Acquiring the skills of lifelong learning, research and following the developments of his/her profession.
15   Having the competency of analyzing interdisciplinary studies, developing a point of view and using of the information and communication technologies.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduate students can work at public or private sectors. Internship is compulsory for the professions of attorney and notary. In order to be appointed as a judge or a prosecutor, success in the entrance exam and internship are required.

Access to Further Studies

As per article 2 of the Council of Higher Education Graduate Education Regulation, those who want to attend to a graduate program shall obtain bachelors degree and fulfill other admission requirements. Applied institution may require other conditions.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Law Faculty, which adopted Active Education System between the years 2001-2008, due to the increased student admission quota has changed its education system into the classic system. However most of the courses involve case studies. Number/ Ratio of the compulsory courses: 33/ approximately 24% of the all courses Number/ Ratio of the elective courses: 105/ approximately 765 of the all courses Ratio of the compulsory courses to the elective courses: An undergrad student during the undergraduate program has to take 31 compulsory, 15 elective in total 46 courses. Elective courses are half of the compulsory courses. An undergrad student takes 15 elective courses in value of 60 ECTS during the undergrad program, in which the total ECTS is 240. In terms of ECTS, the ratio of the elective courses to compulsory courses is 25%. First year students can choose only one of the vocational foreign language courses. First year students can take 1 elective course for the fall semester and 2 elective courses for the spring semester. 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students can take 2 elective courses each semesters in a year. Total ECTS of the elective courses would be 16 each year.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Assessment methods for each course are defined at Course Introduction Form in the information package prepared by related course instructor. Examination and course success grades are subject to the related articles (Art. 22, 23, 24) of the Dokuz Eylül University Law School the Principles of Education and Exam Practice.
Generally for compulsory courses during one academic year two midterms, one final, and one make-up exams are made. For elective courses one midterm, one final, and one makeup exams are made.
As per Article 17 of the Principles, students shall fulfill the requirements below for attending midterm, final, and makeup exams:
a) to attend the lecture courses with 70%,
b) to attend the seminars, applications, and works with 80%,
c) to fulfill homeworks, papers and other works successfully within the given time provided that the course instructor has defined the criterion for being successful.
As per Article 23 of the Principles the passing grade is sixty out-of one-hundred. To pass a course, student must achieve a total score of 60. This total score is the sum of final exams grade and the contribution points from the midterm exams. But to pass a course, student must become at least 50 points from the final exam. These rules are applied for the make-up exams too. Apart from that there is no other requirement special to pass a course.

Graduation Requirements

All courses shall be successfully completed.
Internship is not compulsory for graduation. However for the performance of the professions of attorney, notary, judge and prosecutor, internship is required.
Dissertation is not required.
Minimum ECTS is 60 for each year and 240 ECTS in total.
General grade point average: minimum 60 for each course. Apart from this there is no other GPA requirement.
