General Description

History

The Primary School Teacher Education Programme aims to train teachers for public and private schools belonging to the Ministry of Education. The Programme was opened in 1987-1988 academic year as a Teacher Training High School for two years and since 1992-1993 academic year it has continued to provide education as Primary School Teacher Education Programme for four years. Primary School Teacher Education Programme is one of the undergraduate programmes provided by the Division of Elementary Education. The Programme lasts 4 years with 2 semesters per year. The education to be given to students each semester consists of 14 weeks. The students must complete 4 years of study acquiring 240 ECTS credits. We give priority to keep up with the current trends in the field of teacher education and therefore, curricula are updated and new curricula are implemented in line with the reformation process in the higher education system. Graduates of our department will be responsible for teaching in elementary schools from the first grade to the fourth, therefore we provide a multi-dimensional education programme for the students. Our students take various courses such as culture, teaching methodology, pedagogical knowledge and subject domain knowledge. The rationale of education given in this department is to train teachers who can keep up with the new technologies and the community, who can investigate and question within the frame of scientific, contemporary, democratic and secular point of view. In this context, main aims of the programme can be listed as to educate class-teacher candidates with the knowledge of both theoretical and practical fields, endowed with problem solving skills, having efficiency in cognitive, affective, psychomotor and social areas, holding the notion of being a good example for students, committed to lifelong learning. Besides, the programme aims to graduate prospective teachers who respect modern, scientific, democratic and secular thoughts and who are committed to Ataturks Principles and Revolutions and also sensitive to social and environmental issues.

High school diploma, placement through a nation-wide Student Selection Examination.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The Regulations Concerning Transferring Between Associate Degree and Bachelors Degree Programs, Double Major and Minor Programs and The Interagency Credit Transfer and the Evaluation Terms and Conditions for parallel transfers determined by the University Senate are applied to students in Turkey and foreign countries, who wish to transfer from higher education Institutions to Dokuz Eylul University.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Student must successfully complete all of the courses in the four-year program, in order to graduate. This degree is given to students who pass all courses in the curriculum, successfully complete a minimum of 240 ECTS credits and obtain an overall grade point average of at least 2.00 / 4.00.

Profile of the Programme

The Division of Primary School Teacher Education, with its four-year undergraduate curriculum based on contemporary teacher training approaches, aims to educate qualified teachers who are aware of contemporary assessment and evaluation approaches, enable to design learning environments by means of instructional technologies and use various special teaching methods and techniques in their teaching, keep up with new developments and innovations in their field. Within the frame of this purpose, there are lessons, which aimed at career development of students as well as field information and general knowledge of them, in the curriculum of that program.

5   Being able to use the most appropriate teaching strategy and/or methods and techniques considering student-centered teaching, along with students' individual differences and their developments.
6   Being able to use communication, teaching and information technologies effectively both in learning and teaching levels.
7   Being able to have a good command of a foreign language and use it actively in finding, sharing and producing knowledge both in written and oral forms.
8   Being able to use different measuring and evaluating methods and techniques according to his/her students' cognitive, affective, psychomotor and social developments.
9   Being able to use and develop course materials for the learning and teaching levels in his/her branch.
10   Being able to learn artistic activities and use them in the processes of learning and teaching.
11   Being able to develop an aesthetic view in art, activities, games and sports ranging from national level to the universal.
12   Being able to have personal skills and institutional knowledge in order to form and sustain environmental protection, job security and secure school atmosphere.
13   Being able to act in accordance with human rights and democratic, social, scientific and professional values.
14   Being able to act in accordance with the national and universal sensitivities pointed out in the Basic Law of National Education in their careers.
15   Being able to have sufficient knowledge on his/her duties, rights and responsibilities that are pointed out in the laws, regulations and legislations related to his/her branch and act accordingly.

18   Being able to help students develop their skills on critical and creative thinking and contribute to their problem-solving skills evolve.

Graduates of the Division of Primary School Teacher Education enjoy productive careers in public and private schools run by the Ministry of National Education as teachers or as senior advisers, researchers in many other areas of the public service as civil servants.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Measurement and evaluation methods for each course are defined in the course syllabi prepared by the instructor/s. Exam and passings grades are regulated according to the rules and regulations of Dokuz Eylul University, Buca Faculty of Education undergraduate programs as indicated in their catalogs. According to these students must attend classes, practices and examinations. Students attendance is followed by the Instructor concerned. For almost all required and elective courses there are two written examinations : One midterm examination ( given during each semester and dates of which are announced by the Department in the first month of the semester ) and one final exam. The semester grades are determined by adding forty percent of the midterm exam and sixty percent of the final exam grade. In some courses, additional work such as projects, presentations and assignments could be given to students. If there is an additional work given in that course, then the semester grades are: 30% of the midterm exam, 10% the midterm project and 60% of the final exam. Students are successful in the course if their grades are (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB), (CC), (DC), (DD) and (B); if their grades are (FD), (FF) and (Y), they fail. Students whose GPA are lower than 1.80 cannot register for a new course. Those who have failed in the final exam may take the make-up exam of which grade replaces the final exam and students grades are computated again based upon the make-up exam results.
