: Art and Design Proficiency in Art

General Description

History

The Art and Design Department was established in the 2012-2013 academic year with the support of six departments that are currently continuing their education activities in order to reflect the projection of art and design of Dokuz Eylül University in the light of demands from the world of art and design. The courses have been created and programmed by the faculty members of the Painting, Sculpture, Graphic, Textile, Traditional Turkish Arts and Photography departments in a way that can appeal to all candidates in the art and design student resource. The ultimate goal of the main art branch and the faculty members who teach in the main art branch is to equip the students with the vision of art and design and to reflect the synergy that will arise from the interdisciplinary interaction to the works they will produce and the literature they will create.

Specific Admission Requirements

First or Second Cycle Degree. Acceptable verbal score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year,15 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The basic purpose of the program is to analyze art and design productions, to discuss the conditions and facilities, to review the connection between form and function and to educate artists and designers who will be able to meet the international expectations in today s institutionalized art scene.
Program will convey the knowledge of art and design culture to candidates who understand and synthesize different art and design disciplines and who would like to enhance and advance himself/herself in this platform by offering available examination and production stages which would meet the current expectations. It has been aimed to create such artworks that different branches of art and design aspects would be integrated.

11   Student will have the competence to evaluate the creative and critical studies to explore the internal and external dynamics and the socio-cultural structure of the living environment.
12   Student will have the competence to be able to manage the consolidation process of the original idea by observation, research and experimentation in his/her effective design and artistic approaches.
13   Student will have the competence to be able to represent the professional terminology and the concepts, visual and written sources in his/her own field of study.
14   By being aware of the social and cultural impact of his/her artworks, student will have the competence to be able to contribute to the development of artistic appreciation with his/her original ideas and artworks.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Courses can be completed with assessment methods such as art and/or design work and/or project and performance studies, in addition to methods such as written exam and report presentation, as required by postgraduate education in the field of art education. Exams, assessments and evaluations and their grading may differ for each course. In order for a student to be considered successful in a course, his/her grade must be at least 75 out of 100. The student has to retake the compulsory courses that he/she has failed. If he fails in the elective courses, he can take another elective course instead of that course with the approval of his advisor. Seminar course, specialization and thesis work do not have credits according to the local credit system and are evaluated as successful or unsuccessful. The program consists of at least seven courses, not more than twenty-one credits and at most thirty credits, taken from the course groups specified in the curriculum, thesis proposal, specialization course, proficiency exam and thesis study. Proficiency in Art/PhD education program consists of compulsory courses and elective courses. The total ECTS credits of the program is 240. Students who complete their credits, successfully pass the courses and fulfill the conditions to be determined by the Graduate School Administrative Board have to take the proficiency exam by the end of the fourth semester at the latest. A student preparing a thesis in the Proficiency in Art/PhD program, the results obtained; must complete in accordance with the spelling rules accepted by the relevant Graduate School, also present the artwork in the number and quality/originality determined by the advisor to the jury and defend the thesis orally in front of the jury. After the thesis exam is completed, the jury decides to accept, reject or correct the thesis with absolute majority. The student defends his thesis again in front of the same jury by making the necessary corrections within 6 months at the latest. If the student's thesis is rejected, a new thesis title is determined.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Courses can be completed with assessment methods such as art and/or design work and/or project and performance studies, in addition to methods such as written exam and report presentation, as required by postgraduate education in the field of art education. Exams, assessments and evaluations and their grading may differ for each course. Detailed information on this subject can be found in the lessons section of the curriculum.
The program consists of at least seven courses, not more than twenty-one credits and at most thirty credits, taken from the course groups specified in the curriculum, thesis proposal, specialization course, proficiency exam and thesis study. Proficiency in Art/PhD education program consists of compulsory courses and elective courses. The total ECTS credits of the program is 240.
In order for a student to be considered successful in a course, his/her grade must be at least 75 out of 100.

Students in the Proficiency in Art/PhD program can take undergraduate courses with the recommendation of their advisor. Student; Can take postgraduate courses from other institutes affiliated to the University or from other universities in Turkey or abroad, excluding Dokuz Eylül University, to be counted towards the course load of the program followed by the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Art/Department and the decision of the Graduate School Administrative Board.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of at least 7 courses, not being less than 21 national credits, specialization courses and thesis studies, in total 240 ECTS credits.
