Course Objective

The aim of this course is to search and discuss how the Western styles and techniques belonging to Western painting were adopted after the modernization and renaissance existed in Ottoman Empire in 18th and 19th centuries.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   After the education given with this course, the students are supposed to know the main periods and styles in Ottoman Miniature Art,
2   be informed about the art atmosphere in Ottoman court and the capital, Istanbul, in 18th and 19th centuries,
3   know the concepts and styles in Ottoman visual culture adopted from the West in the 19th century,
4   be informed about religious and secular architecture in Anatolia and in Ottoman court in the 19th century,
5   know the landscape pictures in which the perspective of religious and secular architecture in Ottoman in the 19th century and other Western painting techniques were used.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

In this course, the period in which the Western forms were adopted as a result of the rationalisation in Ottoman Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries will be examined in the wall painting samples. Besides, we will discuss the artists traditional painting comprehension belonging to miniature and how they dealt with the reality concept. The students will also discuss the efforts about mixing traditional with modern in their presentations.
