Course Objective

Creative thinking and problem solving techniques not only make creation process productive but also exist in various branches of art and design.
Synectic, a creative group action method, aims to bring together the factors which seem to be irrelevant and are different from each other and / or bring together different individuals as a problem defining and solving group.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Having knowledge about the definition of creative prosess and factors that effect the creativity.
2   Having knowledge about creative thinking and problem solving techniques.
3   Having knowledge about thinking models used within synectic design methods.
4   Having knowledge about synectic method analysis and synthesis process.
5   It is expected to observe the fact that synectic method can provide creative thoughts about the solutions of design problems in many areas and its possible outcomes in experimental studies by analysing the research results.
6   Being able to know, apply, present the synectic design measures and explain the research he/ she done written and verbally.

1 Defining the creative process- the factors that affects the creativity
2 Creative thinking and problem solving techniques
3 Synectic, a creative, problem solving group action method
4 Process of analysing and synthesizing the synectic method
5 Triple thought model used within the synectic design method
6 Deciding on the project topic and forming the study group
7 After the group leader presents the data acquired by general knowledge and descriptive research result, the participants are expected to give their opinions during the creative designing process.
8 Performing production designs by using the aesthetic principles and field elements during the designing process
9 Performing production designs by using the aesthetic principles and field elements during the designing process

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The lecturer covers the subject by using lecture notes from various sources and visual presentation.
The project topic is researched by using visual and written sources and appropriate materials are chosen for design source. At the end of the sketch process, the designs for products are formed and some of the chosen designs are made into product in atelier. Without prejudice, students express their thoughts during the design process and new so ideas are brought forward.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

During the designing process, the lecturer gives importance to the experimental applications that increase the creativity of students. Moreover, he / she has a solution oriented attitude towards the problems occur in production process.

Assessment Criteria

Students abilities of reviewing the literature, gathering data, compiling, analysing and reporting the conclusions of their subjects are evaluated with project they prepared and presented at the end of the term.
