General Description

History

On March 1, 1978, the Faculty of Medicine at Dokuz Eylül University, initially established as İzmir Medical Faculty by twelve professors, adopted its current name in 1982. The faculty departments are categorized under three main headings: Basic Medical Sciences, Internal Medical Sciences, and Surgical Medical Sciences. In 1997, the undergraduate medical curriculum transitioned to Problem-Based Learning (PBL) for the first three years and Task-Based Learning (TBL) for the clinical internship years.

Our educational program aims to integrate the basic medical knowledge taught in the first three years with the clinical experiences in later years, focusing on patient care, diseases, diagnosis, and treatment processes. The knowledge and skills that students are expected to acquire have been clearly defined, and the program is structured to achieve these objectives. The core content of the program addresses the primary health concerns of the community, incorporating not only biological goals but also social and behavioral objectives. Field studies are designed to expand students' awareness beyond the confines of the university hospital, addressing community health issues, social determinants of health, and national health policies. The curriculum also includes practical applications related to social contribution.

The educational program offers mandatory and elective courses arranged into 5-9 week blocks over the first five years, and six major blocks each lasting eight weeks during the sixth year, known as the internship period, during which students work across all hospital departments. The first three years include Special Study Modules (SSM) where students engage in social responsibility and research projects, and acquire foundational knowledge in Medical Humanities and Critical Appraisal. The education during these years is supported by Synthesis Sessions, Presentations, and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) sessions; in the fourth and fifth years, it progresses with Task-Based Learning (TBL) under the guidance of educational mentors.

Our faculty holds accreditation from the National Medical Education Accreditation Board (UTEAK) and has been internationally recognized with the European Union Diploma Supplement label since 2013.
