Course Objective

The aim of this module is to acquire students the necessary skills for conducting scientific research.
To reach this aim students will participate research activities within the medical faculty and other related institutions based on their preference.
In observational studies, students will plan the study, develop data collection tools and questiannaires to collect data from individuals, from medical records or archive materials. Students will analyse data, present their results and interpret the findings in their report. In experimental studies that will be implemented in the laboratory, clinics or in the community, students will plan, conduct the study, analyse and present their findings.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

In order to pass the research skills SSM
1- Students need to attend %70 of the lectures and small group activities with the advisor.
2- Students need to collect minimum 80 points from the evaluation of the advisor based on the criteria described below.

Assessment Criteria

The advisor evaluates the students achievements on six criteria including finding the appropriate scientific information, interpretation of the scientific evidence, preparing research plan, preparing the methods and tools for the study (questionnaire design etc), conducting the research (data collection, analysis etc) and report writing.
Each criteria is rated between 0 and 4. Then the mean of the scores is multiplied with the total credit given to reserach skills SSM (60) which gives the performance score of the student.
Students need to collect minimum 80 points to pass the research skills SSM.
Students fail, if they can not collect 80 points or do not participate 70% of the activities in the SSM.
If the students fail then they need to repeat research skills SSM (60 hours or 4 weeks) during the following summer. If they fail summer SSM they can not pass to following year.

Course Policies and Rules

Students must attend 70% of the total course time.
Unscheduled students repeat the SSM.
A four-week (60 hours) supplemental SSM is opened in the summer term for the student who fails in the research skills SSM.
The student who fails in completion SSM repeats the grade.
