DEGREE PROGRAMMES

: Geological Engineering

General Description

History

After establishment of Agricultural Faculty of Ege University in 1955, Geology education started. In 1961, Applied Sciences Faculty was opened. Basic and Applied Geology lessons were given in the Geology branch of Natural Sciences Program founded with the Applied Sciences Faculty. Geological research started in Aegean Region starting with the opening of Geology Department. Geology education started in Natural & Applied Sciences Faculty of the Ege University in 1969. By this time, the Geology Department had nearly completed all the needs such as lecturers, teaching materials and supplies. Geology Department showed an important progress in 1975 and offered to the Geological Engineer and Geophysical Engineer education programs within the new Earth Sciences department of the Engineering Faculty in the Ege University. In 1982, Dokuz Eylül University was founded parallel to the 2547 numbered High Education Law . All units in Earth Sciences Faculty of Ege University were assembled within the Geological Engineering Department of the Engineering Faculty of Dokuz Eylül University. In first years, geology and geophysics lectures were given in the Geological Engineering department. Later, the Geophysical Engineering department was founded in 1991 as a separate department. From 1982 to 2005, Geological Engineering Department of the Dokuz Eylül University continued its education in Bornova (Ege University Campus) and moved to Tınaztepe Campus in Buca District in 2005.
The second education system has started training again from 2011-2012 academic years in the Geological Engineering Department. The program language is Turkish.

The Bachelors degree is provided to the students who successfully completed all courses, 30-days of occupational and 10-days of Geological Mapping Camp Internships, and dissertation thesis, and provide a minimum of 240 ECTS credits and a minimum 2.00 / 4.00 grade point average.

Profile of the Programme

Aegean region with Izmir city and its nearby where Dokuz Eylul University is located in, has important geological potential. As an example, the geological data is the most significant component in the reigon in terms of geothermal energy, underground water resources, landslides and soil problems, seismicity, mine deposits, industrial raw materials, marble and urban planning depending on geological structure of the area. For this reason, Geological Engineering program is firstly aimed to prepare students not only for development and workforce of Izmir and its surroundings but also for Aegean Region. The program is aimed to bring up qualified and well-educated geological engineers who are able to progress and start their self-owned business. In this context, the program contains both the basic engineering lectures and also the lectures on geology such as Mineralogy, Geological Mapping, Stratigraphy, Structural Geology, Field Geology, Geochemistry, Hydrogeology, Ore Deposits, Rock and Soil Mechanics and Engineering Geology. Students can benefit Erasmus and Farabi student exchange programs and bilateral relations. Also, the Department Of Geological Engineering has been accredited from Engineering Education Programs Evaluation and Accreditation Association (MÃœDEK) since 2004. In addition to geological engineering program, our faculty offers undergraduate students the opportunity to receive a second undergraduate diploma as a student in a Mining Engineering and Geophysical Engineering programme within the faculty (double major) or to study in a minor programme to enable them to gain knowledge in a specific field such as Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering and Geophysical Engineering programs.
Profile Facility: In the Geological Engineering Department, in addition to standard laboratories, there are well equipped and designed laboratories such as mineral separation laboratory, soil and rock mechanics laboratory, fluid inclusion laboratory, organic petrography laboratory, XRD laboratory, hydrogeology laboratory and microscopy laboratory.

8   The ability to have lifelong learning awareness, to follow current scientific and technological developments and to constantly renew oneself.
9   To comply with academic, technical and professional standards and to act in accordance with ethical principles during the collection, interpretation and announcement of data related to the field.
10   Knowledge of business practices such as project management, risk management and change management, awareness of entrepreneurship, innovation, knowledge of sustainable development.
11   Sensitivity in the protection of geological, environmental and cultural values, producing solutions by developing projects for protection from natural disasters, awareness of the legal consequences of these solutions.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Our alumni have been employed by miscellaneous mining and industrial companies which utilize the geological potential in the Aegean region. Geological potential emphasized above is utilized not only by industrial companies but also self-owned companies established by our graduates. Geological Engineers are able to work at the public sector such as General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA), Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO), General Directorate of State Hydraulics Works (DSI), General Directorate of Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI), Special Provincial Administrations, Municipalities and related ministries and in universities as academic stuff. At the private sector: the mining, petroleum, marble, ground survey, water well drilling, cement-ceramic factories and also other various engineering companies in roles such as an Exploration , Mine, Survey, Geologist-Geological Engineers. Growing up the problem-solving engineers with multidisciplinary teamwork skills, is the most important issue in our program.

Access to Further Studies

May apply to second cycle programmes.
