Course Objective

It is aimed to give to the students the general issues on various kinds of ophiolite complexes, stratified mafic-ultramafic complexes and petrographic, geochemical and petrogenetic features of basic-ultrabasic rocks from distinct types of basalt provinces. The students will be able to interpret the petrography and geochemistry of the basic and ultrabasic rocks, and then to discuss the tectonic settings and petrogenetic evolution of these rocks.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to learn mineralogy and texture of basic-ultrabasic rocks
2   able to classify the basic-ultrabasic rocks on their petrographic and geochemical aspects
3   able to compare mid-oceanic ridge and suprasubduction zone ophiolites on their petrographic and geochemical aspects
4   to learn geochemical evolution of mantle peridotites
5   able to understand matnel melting and magma production
6   able to learn alteration and alteration products in ophiolites
7   able to interpret the basaltic-gabbroic rocks from different tectonic settings
8   to learn the basic-ultrabasic rocks of Türkiye and surrounding
