Course Objective

Political, religious, economic and social structures of Europe and the Islamic world in medieval times will be comparatively investigated in the course.
The aim of the course is to investigate the basic sources and definition ai the medieval civilizations of the East and West; to assess the socio-cultural and economic events; and examination of the dynamics and formations.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To have a literature knowledge on the civilizations of East and West in Middle Ages.
2   To identify the Middle Ages and the development of the Eastern and Western civilizations in Middle Ages
3   To learn the main concepts related to the Middle Ages, the Eastern and Western civilizations
4   To interpret the historical, economic and social developments of the Eastern and Western societies in Middle Ages.
5   To assess the importance of Eastern and Western culture and civilizations in the Middle Ages

2 Political structures in Europe after the Roman Empire
3 Empires and Kingdoms in Medieval Europe I (Merovingian, Carolingians, the Holy Roman Empire)
4 Empires and kingdoms in Medieval Europe II (Kingdoms of England and France, the Papacy, the Byzantine Empire)
5 Leading states in the Islamic world (Umayyad, Abbasid, Karahans, Ghaznavids)
6 Leading states in the Islamic world II (Seljuks, Ayyubids, Mamelukes)
7 Feudal system in Europe; Similar and contrasting aspects of West and East feudalism
8 Midterm exam
9 Causes of the Crusades, implementation and results
10 The effects of the crusades on the world of Islam and the Christian
11 The trade between East and West at Middle Ages
12 Science in the Eastern and Western civilizations at Middle Ages
13 Cultural contacts and interaction between the West and the Islamic world in the middle age
14 Prejudices of medieval Europe and the Islamic world and general remarks
