Course Objective

To learn the mineralogical and petrographic properties of the marble, which is an
important raw material in Türkiye, the types and classification of the marbles, the
geological belts in Türkiye and their marble potentials, and the typical marbles (soft
and hard) in these belts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to understand what marble is as raw material and what is happening in nature (knowledge)
2   To be able to learn and classify the types of marbles (knowledge / synthesis)
3   To be able to learn the marble types and production regions in Türkiye (information)

1 Introduction, definitions and classification, place in the laws, classification of marbles according to their origins and stiffnesses
2 Classification and properties of magmatic origin marbles
3 Classification and characteristics of metamorphic origin marble
4 Classification and characteristics of sedimentary origin marble
5 Other natural stone products (Slate stones), properties and differences
6 Geological belts observed in Türkiye and distribution of the marbles in these belts
7 Geology and marble potential of Pontides-1. Typical rocks and their mineralogical and petrographical features
8 Geology and marble potential of Pontides-2
9 The geology of Bornova Flysch Zone and Karaburun Belt and their marble potential

The course lectures, class presentation and discussion format. All class members are expected to attend to both the lecture and laboratory hours.
In practice, examine the different types of marble in the hands of the sample
Examination of mineralogical and petrographic properties of different marble species from thin sections in practice
