Course Objective

The main objective of the course is supplying students with the different aspects of the light behavior on polished surfaces. Mineral deposits formed in a wide variety of geological environments are introduced, emphasising their relationship to petrological processes and geological settings. The students are supposed to be informed with a collective idea about the intimate relationship between ore microscopy and the branch of ore dressing since the interlocking index of ore and gangue minerals determines the proper method of ore benefication.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Following the completion of this course, students will; have a broad, integrated knowledge of metalliferous ore deposits,
2   Recognise the importance of rock associations.
3   Know the integrated application of mineralogical and textural techniques.
4   Be skilled in the use of reflected light microscopy to identify ore minerals.
5   Be able to define primary deposition and supergene enrichment processes.

Course Contents

1 Reflection of linearly polarized light; reflection between crossed polars
2 Ore microscope and its components. Preparation of slabs and polished sections.
3 Properties observed in plane polarized light (without analyzer).
4 Properties observed between crossed nicols.
5 Ore petrography
6 Geometric shapes of minerals and their genetical meaning
7 External features (crystal form and habit, twinning etc.), internal features (zonation etc.)
8 Minerals and tectonic, intergrowths
9 Inclusions, exsolution
10 Primary textures of ore minerals formed from melts: Orthomagmatic deposits
11 Primary textures of ore minerals from melts: Hydrothermal deposits
12 Primary textures of ore minerals from melts: Colloidal textures.
13 Secondary textures: Replacement textures, metamorphic textures, oxidation-semantation textures
14 Ore Minerals and textures from Türkiye and the world

Laboratory: Students will be grouped (two students per microcope) and these groups will study with microscope.

Assessment Criteria

Mid term Exam: The midterm exam will be completed as two parts. The first part is applied as a written exam evaluating theoretical knowledge. The second part is applied with a microscope evaluating the knowledge on microscope and methods in mineral identification.
Final Exam: The student will be asked to determine the ore minerals under the microscope. In addition, student s theoretical knowledge will be evaluated by asking questions.
