General Description

History

Dokuz Eylul University Social Sciences Institute Sociology Department Doctorate Program began to accept students in 2020 for the first time. The aim of the program is to acquire knowledge about the main concepts and problems of the basic sociology disciplines in a historical and systematic framework. PhD candidates can use the knowledge gained in the field to explain and interpret the human, social and world problems and to propose solutions to these problems; familiar to current debates, able to find, understand and discuss the past, present and future. Revealing projections to the problems of the age and training sociologists in order to represent themselves orally and verbally.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; a minimum Cum. GPA of 80/100 or 3/4; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 55 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM. Transcript; a minimum score of 75 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 14 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

The Doctorate Program of the Department of Sociology, which lasts 4 years, consists of 8 semesters. The language of the courses offered in the program is Turkish.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Our students who graduate from the Sociology Department PhD programs are employed in various public institutions (Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Education, Social Services, etc.), private education institutions, and industrial establishments. They can work as experts and consultants in non-governmental organizations, municipalities and private sector organizations. In addition, graduates of the department can continue their careers in the academic field, at the post-doctoral level, and continue their scientific studies in the field under the roof of the university.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In the curriculum of the Department of Sociology PhD program, courses corresponding to a total of 240 ECTS, including compulsory and elective courses, are presented to students. In order for the students to complete the program successfully, they must successfully complete the course equivalent to 240 ECTS. Students who successfully complete two semesters and pass the following proficiency exam are also required to successfully complete a thesis project. Sociology doctoral program consists of compulsory and elective courses. Students must take at least 30 ECTS courses for each semester, including seminars, specialization courses and thesis work. In addition to completing seminars and specialization courses, students are required to work on a thesis.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation and assessment methods for each course is defined in the the Course Description Form which is prepared by related faculty member / s and included in the information package. Exams and course success notes is subject to the relevant articles of the DEU Regulation on Graduate Education.

Graduation Requirements

During the program, the student can complete the program by taking a total of 240 ECTS (related courses (53 ECTS), specialization courses (4 ECTS), seminar (3 ECTS) and thesis work (180 ECTS) together with the thesis. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.50/4.00) and they must pass all courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
