General Description

History

Department of Psychology was founded in 2009 and it started to accept undergraduate students in 2013-2014 academic years. Undergraduate program in Psychology consists of 30 % of English courses; thus, preparation school in English is obligatory. In terms of graduate education opportunities, there are two master's programs in Psychology and Clinical Psychology, as well as a Psychology Doctorate program.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK) The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylul University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total. In order for students to complete their education successfully in our faculty, their GPA (Grade Point Average) should be at least 2.00. Final year students who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 are entitled to take a one-course examination in order to increase the GPA if they are able to fulfill the condition of a GPA of 2.00 from the courses included in the program of the last four semesters. Those who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 through one-course examination are entitled to take a mid-term exam, final exam or make-up exam from the courses of the last four semesters. The students benefit from this right of examination in the exam period during the semester in which the courses are opened. The students who would like to benefit from this right of examination declare the exams that they will take at the beginning of the semester during registration.
In order to complete from the Undergraduate Program of History Department, it is required that the students complete all the courses equivalent of 240 ECTS offered in the educational plan of 8 semesters, and they have the GPA with 2.00/4.00.

Profile of the Programme

The aim of Dokuz Eylül University Department of Psychology is to educate individuals who are equipped with basic psychological knowledge and scientific thinking skills, who have the ability to disseminate, question and produce the knowledge they have acquired; to produce graduates who can competently apply contemporary psychological knowledge in all sub-fields of psychology within the framework of ethical values, who can transform the skills they have gained into service, and who have social sensitivity and responsibility awareness.
In this direction; the department aims to educate graduates who
1. Have a command of basic concepts, theories and approaches in general psychology and all subfields of psychology,
2. Acquired basic knowledge and skills for applications in different sub-fields,
3. Have an understanding of scientific thinking, critical thinking and reasoning skills,
4. Able to conduct scientific research and produce knowledge,
5. Know ethical principles and values and act accordingly
6. Have social sensitivity and sense of responsibility

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Define the basic concepts, terms and assumptions of psychology and other disciplines that have common studies with psychology; compare the similarities and differences of these disciplines with psychology.
2   Know the history of psychology, know the development of the methods used in psychology, discuss the theoretical contradictions within the discipline of psychology.
3   Know the basic theoretical approaches and perspectives, to be able to compare these theories, to be able to express their similarities and differences, contributions and limitations.
4   Have knowledge about the application areas of psychology. Should know the basic principles of psychological assessment; should be aware of the contributions and limitations of the assessment process.
5   Should have the necessary basic observation, interview, psychological assessment and reporting skills.
6   Be able to follow the developments in the field of psychology in the world and in Turkey, to have knowledge about the researches in the literature, to be able to express psychological knowledge with effective expression and language skills; to have the ability to access various resources and databases.
7   Should have knowledge about quantitative and qualitative research methods and gain the skills and experience of creating a research design of psychological research, selecting a method of analysis, collecting data, interpreting, discussing and reporting.
8   Have an understanding of scientific thinking, learning, critical thinking and reasoning skills; be able to develop interest and curiosity about human behaviour, mind and experiences.
9   Students should be able to recognise the similarities and differences between themselves and others who are different from them on the basis of age, gender, race, ethnic group, national identity, language, religion, sexual orientation, disability and socio-economic status, be able to critically approach their own views and be open to new ideas.
10   Have awareness and sensitivity in interpersonal relationships and social events and problems and to be able to offer solutions based on psychological knowledge.
11   Know the ethical principles and values of psychology and work in accordance with these principles. Act in accordance with ethical principles, rules and values in all activities. Recognise ethical dilemmas in the field and make all decisions on the basis of relevant ethical principles.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates in this Psychology program will get diploma in Bachelor degree in Psychology. This degree provides opportunity to work as psychologist in various organizations of state and private sectors such as organizations in health, education, industry, social work and research centers. Graduates might work in governmental organizations, including Ministries of Health, Justice, Internal Affairs, Security and Police Departments etc. As specific requirements are met, they could also work in Ministry of Education as well. However, in order to increase personal knowledge in specific subfield psychology and to work as an expert in relevant area, students are strongly encouraged to get master degree in various subfields of psychology (i.e., clinical, social, development, cognitive, experimental, industrial/organizational psychology etc.)

Access to Further Studies

Students who have successfully completed their undergraduate education can apply to graduate education programmes in other related fields when they meet the conditions determined in accordance with the relevant regulations (e.g., getting a valid grade from the central ALES exam, foreign language knowledge, interview, etc.), especially in the graduate programmes of the Department of Psychology within the Institute of Social Sciences of our university and other universities, and in other related fields when they meet other possible conditions.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In the curriculum of the Department of Psychology, courses corresponding to a total of 240 ECTS are recommended. The education language of this programme is 30% English. Students are required to take a total of 35 compulsory and 15 elective courses during their undergraduate degree programme. Courses marked with * in the programme will be conducted in English. Students are required to take two (2) elective courses, one of them (1) in English in the 5th semester, four (4) elective courses, two of them (2) in English in the 6th semester, five (5) elective courses, two of them (2) in English in the 7th semester and five (5) elective courses, two of them (2) in English in the 8th semester. 15 ECTS of elective courses must be taken from the `University Elective Course Pool or from other faculties or departments. GÇD 1000 Volunteerism Studies Course and PSI 4058 Applications and Writing Report in Volunteerism Studies courses must be taken together. Students taking IHD 1001 Human Rights course must take an additional course worth at least 1 ECTS. Students can take English elective courses with the same credits and ECTS instead of the Turkish elective courses in the curriculum and fulfil the graduation requirements. However, Turkish elective courses cannot be taken instead of English elective courses.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The assessment methods used for each course are defined in the Course Syllabus Form prepared by the Instructor of the course and included in the Information Package. The related articles of the Regulations on Dokuz Eylul University Upper Secondary Education, Undergraduate Education and Examinations and Education and Examination Principles of Faculty of Letters are applied.

Graduation Requirements

The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and 240 ECTS. Graduation requirements are as stated in the chapter Qualification requirement and regulations.
