Course Objective

This course aims to cover the biological mechanisms underlying sleep and wakefulness processes, terms related to sleep and biological rhythms, functions and measurement of sleep, sleep disorders and the effects of sleep deprivation on our mental health. In addition, the relationship of sleep with academic performance and social media use; the effect of sleep on psychological well-being and social relationships; and the role of sleep on brain functions such as memory, learning and emotion processing will be discussed through articles.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Students will be able to define the concepts and terminology necessary for the field of sleep
2   2. Students will be able to explain the mechanisms underlying the processes of sleep and wakefulness
3   3. Students will be able to discuss the effects of sleep on academic performance and psychological well-being.
4   4. Students will be able to communicate the effects of sleep deprivation on cognitive functions
5   5. Students will have general knowledge about sleep disorders.
6   6. Students will be able to explain the role of sleep on various functions of the brain such as learning, memory, emotion processing.

40% of the midterm exam grade and 60% of the points obtained from the presentations will constitute the total score of the course.
