General Description

History

Architecture Department of Dokuz Eylul University was established in 1982. Since then, it has been one of important educational institutions of Turkey with its academic staff and continuously renewed academic study programs. Besides its undergraduate program, the department has been providing Msc and Phd programmes on Architecture. In this context, the Structural Construction Design programme continues its studies on the subspecialities of the academic staff and contributes to meet the need of qualified architects for the scientific society.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; minimum 80/100 or 3/4 Cumulative Grade Point Average, minimum score of 60 from the National Central Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field; a minimum score of 70 from the graduate school entrance exam; a minimum score of 55 from the nation-wide Foreign Language Exam ( YDS ) or equivalent score from an exam accredited by YÖK.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The aim of Ph. D. in Structural Construction Design Program is the implementation of a multi-purpose program, which makes it possible for graduates of an architectural M. Sc. program- to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to improve their expertise, competence and ability in all the areas of structure and construction (structure, material, processes of construction and work organization as well as fields that require specialty such as building physics, acoustics, earthquake management, sustainable building construction, building design with steel, energy performance, building economics, i.e.). As a result the program takes these principles as its basis: sharing works with the partners in their study area, with public and scientific fields at global and national levels by way of publications and thesis, and to obtain professional applicational adequacy in any medium.

1   To gain the adequate knowledge in order to take place and participate in projects within their own areas of expertise at departments of private and public institutions,

4   To obtain advanced specialized skills and techniques to give lectures in national and international universities, and take part in working groups and research / innovation projects in their areas,
5   To gain the level of proficiency with advanced knowledge and skills to write papers based on original theoretical and experimental practices to national / international peer-reviewed journals, as well as to present and defend them in national / international meetings,
6   To be able to show scientifically ethical, reputable, always honest and constructive behavior in both education and research fields,
7   To obtain the intellectual knowledge to express their views as an expert in their chosen area in any medium,
8   To have the quality to exhibit the level of determination and understanding that would manage and guide their academic and scientific studies to maximize national interest and human benefit,
9   To gain advanced specialized skills and techniques prone to inter-disciplinary studies in order to contribute to joint projects not only related to their areas of expertise but also to other areas of expertise,
10   To show a level of skill and talent to be able to lecture, open new courses and bring up students at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels at both their areas of expertise and other areas of the profession.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Architecture graduates, who has Ph. D. degree, work wide range areas that profession gives opportunity to perform. Some of them keep going to work academic and start to work as a research assistant in universities.They are also employ different parts of public sector.In addition, employment of graduate students employ as a freelance office architect, project designer, construction site architect and designer who works on the presentation (3D - three-dimensional presentation, model, etc.).

Hence architecture is a wide range working area and our instution is preferred, graduates do not have problem of unemployment.

May apply to post doctorate programmes.

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Related items of Dokuz Eylul University Regulations of Graduate Education and Exams and related items of Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences Regulations of Education and Code of Practicing Exams are applied for the exams and course grades. The course evaluation criteria are defined for each course by the instructor(s) of the corresponding course and are given in the Course Description Form found in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctor of Philosophy) Programme is comprised of courses (at least 67 ECTS),Ph.D.Seminar (5 ECTS), Ph. D. Research (18 ECTS) / Ph. D. Thesis (150 ECTS) courses, thesis proposal, doctoral qualifying examination and thesis examination with a total credit of 240 ECTS. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
