Course Objective

ARC 5003 Building System Research and Design I is a course, mainly concerned with research on contemporary structural systems and technologies in architecture. This course analyses the building construction and structural systems; investigates the concepts, theories and basic principles. Each student work on an aspect of structural and constructional systems contemporary issues throughout their particular research topic such as mass-housing, mega-structures, airport buildings, exhibition buildings etc.

4   Recognizing the effects of technological developments to architecture.

7   Being capable of monitoring technological developments and having skills to analyze buildings in the construction industry

1 Giving information about the course and research papers. Information about the aims, methods and references of the course. Information about research assignments. Study for individual research assignments.
2 Definition of technology. Technological development process in architecture. Giving information about the research methods of homework assignments according to the construction and structural systems of buildings. Presentation of individual research assingments. Study for individual research assignment. Students must prepare a presentation about the individual research assignments.The students come to class with at least five different title should be the subject of research.
3 The important of technological developments in architecture. Technological developments in building structure and materials. Giving information about the research methods of homework assignments which include construction and structural systems of buildings. Determination of individual research topics. Presentation of individual research assingments. Study for individual research assignment. Students must prepare a presentation about the individual research assignments.
4 The reflections and important effects of technological developments on architecture Giving information about structural systems. Determination of evaluation criteria of research topics. Presentation of individual research assingments. Study for individual research assignment. Students must prepare a presentation about the individual research assignments. Students are required to identify the scope and purpose of proposed research topic.
5 Analysis of the relationship among structure, materials and technology Giving information about structural systems. Determination of evaluation criteria of research topics. Course Policies and Rules

This is a course relying on group and individual research, presentation of sample designs and group discussion of them in the classroom. After 3th week of the program each student chooses a topic and works separately but all members of the class take part in the weekly discussion sessions. Each student prepares and submits his works in form of a research booklet.
