DEGREE PROGRAMMES

: Environmental Engineering

General Description

History

The Department of Environmental Engineering of Dokuz Eylül University (DEU-ENVE) is the first Environmental Engineering Department in Türkiye which offers Bachelor of Science Degree. The department was founded in 1975 under Faculty of Engineering Sciences of Ege University. The department later became a part of Faculty of Engineering and Architecture after Dokuz Eylül University was founded in 1982. In 1992, the departments of Architecture and City Planning separated from this faculty. Then, the Department of Environmental Engineering became a part of Faculty of Engineering. Department provided only formal education program since it was founded in 1975 to 1992, then in years between 1992 and 1997, non-formal education program, which run parallel to its formal education program, was provided. Currently, the education program constitutes only formal education program known as Turkish Program. In addition to the undergraduate program, the department also provides graduate level education and offers Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Engineering within the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences. The educational language of the graduate program is English.

Qualification Awarded

Environmental Engineering, Bachelors Degree (B.Sc)

Level of Qualification

First Cycle (Bachelors Degree)

Specific Admission Requirements

High school diploma, placement through a nation-wide Student Selection Examination.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

For students who intend to transfer to Dokuz Eylül University from universities in Türkiye and in foreign countries, the articles of Regulation on the principles of student transfer between programs at associate and undergraduate degrees in higher education institutions, dual major and minor program standards and principles on credit transfers between institutions as well as the Evaluation Criteria on Student Transfer determined by Dokuz Eylül University Senate are implemented.
The vertical transfers of the graduates of Vocational Schools to undergraduate programs related to their completed programs are subject to the rules of Regulation on the continuation of the graduates of Vocational Schools and Distant Learning Programs to undergraduate programs.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

To graduate from this 4 year program, students are required to successfully complete all courses and satisfy a minimum of 240 ECTS credits. The students also need to complete the 12 weeks practical training program, complete the graduation project and have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of a minimum of 2.00 / 4.00.

Profile of the Programme

The objective of First Cycle ( Bachelors Degree ) program is to train graduates capable of designing, constructing and operating processes related to environmental engineering; participating in R&D activities related to environmental technology; applying environmental management tools for the sustainable use of environmental sources; working individually or in a team. To achieve this objective, the program includes courses on environmental chemistry, environmental microbiology, ecology, hydrology, structural and soil mechanics related to environmental infrastructures, unit processes in environmental engineering, chemical and biological processes, water and wastewater treatment, water supply and sewerage, solid waste management, marine outfalls, air pollution control and environmental management. These courses are supported with modern educational materials. Successful students of the program may also complete Dual Major Undergraduate Program and/or Minor Program in Computer, Geophysical, and Mining Engineering Departments. Students who successfully complete the dual major program receive another diploma in the second major and students who successfully complete the minor program receive a certificate in the second program. The department is MÃœDEK-accredited since 2006 and has EUR-ACE label since 2011. The Bologna Process (European Higher Education Area compliance studies) is underway since 2010 in the department that will allow citizens of countries from European Higher Education Area to have easier access to get higher education and to work within Europe. During the Bologna compliance studies conducted in the department, the aims and outcomes of the Environmental Engineering program that was set within the scope of MUDEK are updated in parallel to the internal and external shareholders opinions and the European Education Area principles. The University received Diploma Supplement Label in 2012 and Diploma supplements are provided to graduates. The department aims to form bilateral agreements with internationally renowned institutions for student and staff exchange In this context, the department has 11 and 20 bilateral agreements within the scopes of ERASMUS Student and Staff Exchange Program and FARABÄ° National Exchange Program, respectively, as of 2012.
The educational and research activities are conducted with a qualified and experienced academic staff. The Environmental Engineering Department provides service to governmental and local administrations, industry and other private sector institutions with its strong academic and technical infrastructure that consists of qualified and experienced academic and technical staff and advanced laboratory and research facilities.
The department has advanced laboratories for educational and research activities. Within this scope, Wastewater, Air Pollution, Environmental Microbiology and Treatment Plant Sludge Laboratory not only serves as research facilities of the department but also provide experimental and measurement service to industry. Quality management system and accreditation studies are effective for guarantied experimental service. The laboratories of the department have Accreditation Certificates of TURKAK and Proficiency Accreditation Certificates of Ministry of Environment and Urban Development from. In addition, the department also has Solid Waste and Soil Pollution Laboratory, Water Laboratory and Waste Bioprocesses Laboratory where educational activities are conducted and support for scientific and academic projects of industry, private and government institutions are provided.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Our graduates can be employed in both government and private sectors. Primary governmental institutions include the Ministry of Environment and Urban Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Water Affairs and general directorates related to these ministries (i.e., State Hydraulic Works, DSÄ°), provincial directorates of these ministries, municipalities and their water and sewerage administrations. In private sector, our graduates can work in any industry in the departments such as environmental pollution and waste management and occupational health and safety. Furthermore, our graduates can also work in and/or establish engineering firms that conduct planning, design, construction and management of infrastructure and environmental investments. They can also work as environmental auditors which is a popular line of business, recently.

Access to Further Studies

May apply to second cycle programmes.
