Course Coordinator

PROFESSOR DOCTOR GÖRKEM AKINCI

Offered to

Environmental Engineering

Course Objective

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to have basic knowledge about solid waste sampling and site selection and design principles of collection/transfer/transport, storage, composting/digester and incineration/pyrolysis plants, to be able to make the necessary design at intermediate level, to calculate the initial investment and operating costs of the plants, to compare the systems and their modifications.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to state the general and specific properties of solid wastes, to be able to list the types of facilities used in waste utilisation, to be able to express their design criteria.
2   Can explain the reasons for the creation of the design criteria, the changes in the design criteria, design problem solving.
3   To be able to use waste characteristics and design principles, to decide on the choice of technology and location, to form the components of disposal systems.
4   Can compare different technologies, criticise the proposed technology.
5   Can design, make suggestions to improve or adapt existing technologies.
6   Can propose a process or a system, can defend the proposed system, can compare it with other proposals, can explain the criteria used in design.
