Course Objective

To give a knowledge about the features of the unit operations such as precipitation, filtration and aeration and basic theoretical principles, used in Environmental Engineering.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Gives information about the basic processes of environmental engineering
2   Gives information about the theory and design principles of sedimentation
3   Provides the knowladge about filtration mechanism and ability to sand filters design
4   Provides the knowladge about gas transfer mechanism and the ability to solve problems relatedto aerators
5   Provides the ability to define and solve problems in the field of environmental engineering

1 Types of sedimentation basins, water treatment facilities usage, structural features
2 Bottom screening and flow conditions in sedimentation ponds
3 Theory and design principles of discrete and flocculant type sedimentation
4 Numerical applications on sedimentation
5 Sedimentation applications in the laboratory
6 Usage of sand filtration in wastewater treatment plants
7 Mechanisms of filtration, sand filter elements
8 Sand filter hydraulic problems, the design principles, flow control in the filter and slow sand filters
9 Numerical applications on filtration
10 Filtration applications in the laboratory
11 Gas transfer mechanisms and types of aerators
12 Aerators used for the treatment of drinking water and wastewater treatment and selection procedures
13 Numerical applications on aeration
14 Aeration applications in the laboratory
