Course Objective

Giving basic information about indoor air quality and pollutants affecting air quality, giving practical application of indoor air pollutants sampling and analysis methods, giving approaches to solving indoor air pollution problems.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define indoor air quality.
2   To be able to define environmental parameters, pollutants and pollutant sources that affect indoor air quality.
3   To have knowledge about national and international standards, criteria and regulations determined for the protection and improvement of indoor air quality.
4   To have information about monitoring indoor air quality, measurement and analysis of pollutants.
5   To be able to define the methods related to the protection, improvement and control of indoor air quality.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Week 1 Introduction to indoor air quality. Air quality, outdoor air, indoor environment, indoor air quality terminology, definitions and units. Thermal comfort parameters and physical parameters affecting indoor air quality.
2 Week 2 The effect of outdoor air pollution on indoor air quality.
3 Week 3 Air pollutants (inorganic)
4 Week 4 Air pollutants (organic)
5 Week 5 Air pollutants (biological and radioactive)
6 Week 6 Examining the contents of materials used in the interior environment (Solvent-based paints, flame retardants, strength-enhancing materials, etc.)
7 Week 7 Sources of pollutants affecting indoor air quality. The effect of external weather, materials used in the indoor environment (furniture, carpet, electronic materials, pets, etc.)
8 Week 8 Measurement, monitoring and analysis methods of pollutants in Indoor Air.
9 Week 9 Exposure patterns to pollutants found in indoor air quality. Exposure to pollutants by dermal, inhalation, ingestion. Multiple pathways exposure and health risk assessments, Indoor Air Quality and health effects, approaches to personal exposure determination.
10 Week 10 Indoor Air Quality Limit Values and Regulation Applications Applied Worldwide (ASHRE, EPA, National Indoor Air Quality Limit Values (example of Germany, Canada etc.). National Indoor Air Quality Protection and Limit Value Determination Studies.
11 Week 11 Indoor Air Quality Protection, Control and Improvement Practices Improving outdoor air quality and reducing its contribution to indoor air. Filter systems and applications. Absorption systems and applications. Adsorption systems and applications.
12 Week 12 Indoor air quality modelling. Model definitions, model approaches. EPA indoor air quality models (IAQX, PARAMS).
13 Week 13 Project/Assignment presentation
14 Week 14 Project/Assignment presentation
