Course Objective

Objectives of this course are to give basic design principles of mechanical and
biological treatment units for domestic and municipal wastewater considering water
pollution control, to give ability of appropriate flow scheme production and design of
all units in order to design wastewater treatment plants in detail. In addition, to
give ability of suitable wastewater treatment plant projection, design, and operation
considering environmental sustainability and engineering ethics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Defining main components of project management for wastewater treatment plant design
2   Defining treatment processes and determining main project data (qualitative and quantitative properties of wastewater, treatment processes, data for application) for wastewater treatment plant projection
3   Designing of treatment units
4   Designing of units' details (influent-effluent structures, hydraulic profile, selection of equipments, cost analysis, etc.) and interpreting the different alternatives
5   Having the ability to carry out projects and write project reports with in the team work

1 Project management, environmental sustainability, engineering ethics and economy, env. health and safety
2 Elements of wastewater treatment plant design, execuation of project groups and delivery of design data
3 Environmental Legislation on Water Pollution Control and Urban Wastewater Treatment; flow schemes, calculation of design flowrates
4 Designing of pumping station, selection and layout of pumps
5 Designing of mechanical treatment units and selection of equipments: screening - Project control
6 Designing of mechanical treatment units and selection of equipments: grit chamber Designing of venturi channel
7 Design of biological treatment units: General design principles of activated sludge systems - Advanced biological treatment
8 Design of activated sludge unit, design details on aeration tank, design of aeration systems and equipment selection - Project control
9 Secondary settling tank design: inlet-outlet structures, sludge withdrawal, recycling pump selection and others
10 Disinfection - Project control
11 Cost analysis of aeration tank: construction and equipment costs - field trip to wastewater treatment plant
12 Hydraulic profile calculations of the wastewater treatment plant
13 Membrane bioreactor
14 Examples of wastewater treatment plants - project delivery

Midterm exam grades, contribution to the project, and final exam grade is considered.

Course Policies and Rules

In mid-term projects, project groups are consisting of 2-3 persons and their
calculations and drawings must be checked by the project advisors. Each student must
provide individual contribution to the groups. Students will prepare the final project
report including required calculations, drawings, catalogs, etc. considering basic
principles and data given at the beginning of the lecture.
