General Description

History

Dokuz Eylül University Institute for Social Science Department of History was founded in 1998. There are 11 Professors, 5 Lecturers and 4 Research Assistants in the Department of History. Ph.D. Program is still active as an interdisciplinary program in the Department of History. The Program is designed to focus on specific areas in History to educate professionals in History on the basis of scientific and historiographical methodologies. The mode of education is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; a minimum Cum. GPA of 80/100 or 3/4; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM. Transcript; a minimum score of 75 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

It is to raise students as historians who can follow the developments in Turkey and abroad closely and analyze the historical roots of these developments, who has the ability to see the events with an academic insight coherent with the comparative history method, who are sensitive to the national and global events, who has internalized the objective and critical approach, who has obtained the knowledge to evaluate the latest developments in history over the world, who are cognizant of the basic sources and who has the ability to consider and evaluate sources comparatively.

2   Ability to know fundamental and actual sources and literature of discipline of History
3   Ability to realize reconstruction of historical facts on basis of modern methodology
4   Ability to compare and to analyze transformation steps in history of Turkey and in World History
5   Acquisition of skills required to know a high level of language to read and to translate sources and documents
6   Ability to make an independent research in a multidisciplinary approach

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The related Ph.D. degree enables the holder to exercise the profession. Graduates may specifically apply to academic and scientific associations such as Turkish Historical Association as a researcher or master in a field; public and private universities as research assistant and lecturer or master in a field; state and private schools as teachers; and, press and mass-media companies.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (84 ECTS), a field study (3 ECTS), seminar (3 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
